Why is my HDMI 2.0 not running 240Hz on 1080p?
I have a 165Hz monitor and a HDMI 2.0 cable. However it doesnt let me go past 144Hz despite my laptop having an HDMI 2.0 port. I need help on how to fix this! My monitor is VG258 and as I mentioned the cable should be compatible of running up to 240Hz on 1080p but it cant go past 144Hz. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Usually 165Hz would be an OC, which you must enable within the Monitor's On-Screen Menu system. Then restart your PC and then 165Hz should be an available option for the native screen res.
Check overclock in your monitor settings? I believe the 165Hz on that monitor is just overclock with native 144Hz otherwise.
Check your manual, I believe that 165hz is only available thru Displayport.
I might be wrong but I think you need 2.1 for higher refresh rate at 1080p
165hz you usually need to overclock to achieve on a hdmi. But 165hz or higher might only be achievable over a display port.
You should be using DisplayPort anyways and actually, that might be a requirement for that Display. Most Displays that offer both HDMI and DP, will usually require you use DP in order to run those higher refresh rates. IDK why anyone would ever use HDMI for their PC, unless you doing a media PC or a living room PC with a TV that uses HDMI 2.2. HDMI 2.0 sure as heck doesn't support above like 75-120Hz at most. You'd need a Display and GPU that both have HDMI 2.2 along with the latest spec HDMI cable in order to achieve higher over HDMI, as long as the Monitor actually supports those higher refresh via HDMI, as most do not.
