Does AMD SAM work with b450 motherboards?
I have a Ryzen 7 2700x cpu socketed inside a Gigabyte B450 Gaming X motherboard.

I have just bought a Radeon rx 6800

Would I be able to use SAM if I upgraded to a Ryzen 5 5600x?Is it worth the about 180 dollars investment?

For money reference, I live in Romania, where 1100 dollars for a Radeon RX 6800 Gigabyte gaming OC is considered a fair price in this wonderful time, and where I just resold my 8 months old RX 5700xt Gigabyte gaming OC for 650 dollars.

I just bought a brand new Gigabyte OC RX 6800, and I get the same if not worse performance than my old 5700xt, in AC Valhalla and COD Black Ops.

I will try and post below photos of my utilization stats.. CPU utilization hovers at about 60%. Any causes you can think of? Thank you
should def be seeing better. The 5700xt isnt far off from the highly tuned Vega64 I was using before upgrade and I saw an easy 2.5x increase stock over my previous tuned results.

You should be getting twice the frame rate at same settings, or higher settings at same frame rate.

Whats the CPU?

nevermind, stupid issue solved. for some reason, system only read 8gb ram. Reseating the sticks in the same slots apparenlty solved it. Wtf...

It's always possible that even though the RAM slots, auto-close on their own, that the RAM module some how was not actually down all the way. Its why its always best to install RAM while the Motherboard is on a hard flat surface. Sometimes when done while its inside the case, the Motherboard bends depending on how you applied pressure to RAM upon insertion, and also where the RAM slots are physically between the stand-offs.

I have an RX 6900 XT + X570 mobo (latest beta Bios) + R9 3900X, I had enabled SAM in the Bios setting Display Adapter property tab shows 'Large Memory Range' which is indicative that SAM has been enabled.

From what I've read online, mobo makers are releasing BIOS updates for 300 and 400 series mobos to extend SAM to Zen 1, Zen 1+ and ZEN 2 CPUs.

I've also read that even RX 5000 series can use SAM, not sure about VEGA and 500 series (and earlier) GPUs

Very exciting to hear that. Thanks!

Okay, quick question. Will upgrading my motherboard's BIOS to the latest version (F60e i believe it is) leave it unable to run my Ryzen 7 2700x? I think the F60e update allows for SAM usage, but I'm not sure whether there is a risk the mb will not be able to run my current CPU. Thank you!

Bare in mind that your driver may not activate SAM if it detects the Ryzen 3900x on Windows.

As other mentioned, AMD only guarantees support on Ryzen 3 CPUs. Although older CPUs support this feature, it is probably deactivated on Windows (on Linux you have to force the driver to enable BAR support for any CPU different to Ryzen 3... at least for now)

Doesnt work like that.

@OP

Can confirm SAM is working on MSI X570 Unify with a 3900x with 6800.

Increase in benchmarks ranges from 1-5% so far. Havent tested games yet.

Where is your source to verify this kind of info? Or is it just an issue you've had on your own PC?

Plus you state it won't work on a 3900X CPU, yet you say it requires a Ryzen 3 CPU... like WTF are you referring to with Ryzen 3. Ryzen 3 is a sub-series within a CPU Family. I.E. Ryzen 3, 5, 7, 9... Did you mean Ryzen 3xxx series CPUs as a whole? And if so how does that make any sense if you state that it wouldn't work on a 3900X, which is a Ryzen 3xxx series CPU using Zen2

What I say is based on information that AMD devs shared on forums (link at the end of my comment).

Yeah, I meant for Zen 3 CPUs.

Here you can get some information related to the driver support: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Mesa-21.0-SAM-Zen-3-RDNA2

And here are some comments from an AMD driver dev: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/linux-graphics-x-org-drivers/open-source-amd-linux/1215570-linux-support-expectations-for-the-amd-radeon-rx-6000-series?p=1215694#post1215694

If I recall correctly, they even mentioned that this feature can also be enabled on some Intel CPUs.

Ryzen3 and Zen3 do not mean the same things what so ever, so please.
But I listed AMD's official requirements at the very top of this thread. Like I said Ryzen 5xxx series, as are AMD's exact words per their requirements page. Forget all this Zen2 / Zen3 stuff for a moment, its very confusing to some. It's easier to just speak upon a series of CPUs. Now I understand that with Ryzen 3xxx series, IIRC the ones such as 3500X and above are Zen2 and the 3xxx series models below that are still just a Zen+

As I said, I meant for Zen 3. If needed I can edit my comment...

Regarding the official requirements, if you read my comment with the corrections you will see that in the end I say the same as you wrote in your comment. But, based on what AMD Linux driver devs mentioned (read my links) it is not true that you cannot enable SAM with Ryzen 1/2/3xxx as you can actually override this setting on Linux (with a big "Here be dragons" of course).

Long story short, if you are using Windows you're probably out of luck if you don't fulfill current AMD requirements but in the future this may change.

Anyone saying windows cant work with SAM and older boards, chips, or gpu's is not correct. It might indeed be on a case by case basis for awhile, but fundementally its all there.

I have it working correctly (with predicted performance boosts seen) on a 3900x and windows 10...

The thing is, many are going off the 'official' requirements from AMD, but those of us with 'older' CPU's and appropriate AMD drivers that support SAM have actually gotten SAM to work. I got mine to work, though truth be told, I'd not bothered to test.
