Steam preventing win10 from putting monitors into sleep mode
Motherboard: GIGABYTE B450 AORUS M
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
RAM: 16 GB Crucial Technology 1333.3 MHz (DDR4-2666 / PC4-21300)
PSU: THERMALTAKE SMART 600W 80+ ATX PSU

Monitors: 2 Lenovo LI2264d - HDMI (main) & VGA connections.
OS: OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Version10.0.19042 Build 19042

No overclocking of any components.

I have narrowed this issue down to Steam. if I exit steam completely my monitor will go to sleep, but if I leave steam running in background it prevents it from ever turning off the monitor.
PC Sleep works as intended - monitors will not enter power-save mode with Steam client running.

I've tried reinstalling Steam, removing all temp data from %APPDATA% - also tried the standard and beta clients. Issue persists.

I like to have monitor go into power save mode, any ideas?

I have the same issue. Displayport and HDMI monitors WON'T turn off unless Steam is closed (tray icon must be closed too.

Strangely, my 1 dual dvi monitor (on 1660) can turn off fine. The bug is only for DP and HDMI. This bug persists even after a clean install of win11.

I don't have Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Detection Driver (USB) in Device Manager.

  1. Open Device Manager (press Start then type Device Manager and click it).
  2. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers node at the very bottom
  3. Single-click on Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Detection Driver (USB)
  4. Click the View menu at the top and select Devices by connection
  5. The tree will rearrange. Find the device you previously selected at step 3 (it should be selected in blue). You might need to scroll a little.
  6. You should see three devices named USB Input Device under it. Repeat the following steps for all three of them.
  7. Right click it and select Properties.
  8. Click the Power Management tab and untick the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox.
  9. Press OK.
  10. Once you've done this for the three devices, your screen should now turn off after the monitor sleep period (I temporarily set it to 1 minute while testing to confirm it works).

Following these steps solved the issue for me. Thank you!

I'm running Windows 11 Pro 22H2 and don't have this driver listed in device manager "Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Detection Driver (USB)", but I applied the suggested actions to two drivers; both called "USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)", which successfully resolved the issue.
OK so i installed Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Detection Driver (USB), followed the instructions and now the screen SOMETIMES stays off when turned off. Generally the window must be closed (only app icon shows) and the screen would stay off... but not always!

Sometimes I only have steam systray icon but the monitor still turns back on automatically! Again this isn't a problem for my dual dvi monitor... only my DP one ( dell s27dgf). Terrible programming and lack of ownership here all around by these companies :(
Set the Mouse in Device Manager to not be able wake the system
Forget all of the above, do this... You all know what to do, you don't need your hands holding...

1. Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options
2. Click 'Change Advanced Power Settings'
3. Expand 'PCI Express'
4. Expand 'Link State Power Management'
5. Change to 'OFF'
6. Click 'Apply' and 'OK'
7. Enjoy looking at a blank screen after the required time has passed
8. This is when you thank me.

No one needs to do that if you select High or Ultra Performance power plan which is what every one should be using on Desktops

No one needs to 'Set the Mouse in Device Manager to not be able wake the system' your litte suggestion did sweet FA.
Also, uninstall Alienware Command Centre if you have it, 1. it's rubbish and 2. it's preventing your monitor from entering SB

Sorry, but all you suggestions are no use for me...
X out Steam so it gets minimized to Tray
Press WINKEY+L

Displays will go to Sleep after about 10-15 secs of no interactions from Keyboard/Mouse

You're welcome.

Thanks for the new idea. However it didn't work, if steam is still preventing Windows goes to sleep.
Then it's something with your PC Settings or the Steam Settings.

I have Steam on all my PCs and the Displays go to Sleep if I use WINKEY+L since that is different and does not use things like Screen Saver or Display Power Off Timer set by Power Profile.

One time it did not and that's because Windows Updates was in the middle of running.

One way around it also is:
> Enable Screen Saver = Blank Screen @ desired time
> Disable Mouse ability to Wake PC Device

I was able to locate the exact device for me that caused the screen wakeup. Yes, closing steam or disabling "NVIDIA High Definition Audio" fixed the issue, but it incurred a loss of functionality which is not acceptable to me (not getting updates in the background, and not having audio over HDMI to my TV). So I began looking for a workaround that didn't involve loss of functionality. The hints at the Microsoft keyboard/mouse here and in other threads seemed relevant to me since I have those devices, but I couldn't get it to work as the devices mentioned didn't have the correct power options. So I delved deeper into device manager.

This is how I got my screen to sleep properly and keep both Steam and NVIDIA Audio enabled (I'm on Windows 11 22H2):

At first I thought disabling the power setting for any one of three "USB Input Device" under the detection driver solved the issue, but then the issue came back. Disabling the power option for all three did the trick and the issue didn't return. If you don't own a Microsoft keyboard and mouse, I suggest you too try combing through the entirety of the device manager, disable the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for all of them, and then slowly turn them back on until the monitor stops sleeping properly.

Thank you. I iterate this process for each of my USB input device, and finally found the cause the problem. It is a Microsoft sculpt mouse wireless adapter. I didn't use that mouse for a while, had its battery removed, but its adapter is still on my PC...

You are right. I had that problem and came here to find the answer...
But yes this is one major OS Default folks over-look; "Allow wake device" is enabled for things like Mouse or Mouse Wireless Adapter. Turn that off on either of those.

Otherwise the slightest vibration or mouse movement might wake and/or keep the Displays awake.

You can always wake the system using the Keyboard
