Has anyone ever actually seen a dead pixel?
In thirty five years of life I've never witnessed a dead pixel and honestly did not even know they existed until fairly recently. What exactly are the odds of the defect showing up? Is it a modern production phenomenon, linked to cheaper products/parts or has this always been around?

It is common on some cheap panels. It's mainly luck which decides if your screen has dead pixels or not.

Yes. Depends on the monitors you buy and chance.

Yeah, my 1440p monitor has a dead pixel, it's barely noticeable.
I'd only seen them on TVs before, never on a monitor. I don't think they're that much of a problem, if they are, just get a replacement.

Yep, my current acer predator has one. It's a decent panel. First dead pixel I've had across a dozen LCDs. I've mostly developed blindness to it. One pixel out of 3,686,400 pixels isn't the worst thing in the world.

Like anything, it's luck of the draw. The universe isn't perfect, even when it comes to quality products.

Nope. Seen a few stuck pixels on my old monitor (PG278Q), for the first few weeks, but touching the screen on that spot was enough to fix it... After that it was all good.

Tethering my laptop by HDMI to the living room display for several hours kept resulting in stuck red and green pixels on the laptop display. They cleared up after an hour or two of normal operation with the laptop screen, but still, the laptop battery life was also taking a hit from keeping it plugged in or repeatedly running it down and recharging, so I went and built a full PC with a HAF XB EVO case especially for the TV stand instead of the laptop.

Yeah my current 1440 ips panel has one, but it's noticable only with some colors, so it's probably just stuck? I don't know...it's the very second pixel in the upper left side, i never notice it.

My first/current LCD monitor (from 2009-2010) has one, or rather, it's not a totally dead, but the Red sub-channel of that one pixel refuses to work, so it's 1/3 dead. Any color that needs any Red added to that pixel is off in color (full White shows as Cyan, Black shows as Black, full 100% Red would be Black too).

Thankfully, it's in the upper left 5% to 10% of the display so it's not near the center, and I don't notice it unless I'm trying to look for it. Multiple, fully dead pixels scattered around more towards the center would bother me though. I remember a lot of guarantees from some manufacturers/shippers wouldn't count less than a set amount (like 4 to 8) dead pixels as bad enough to return.

Yes, a long time ago now I learned a lesson from Alienware not to buy Alienware. I had a m9700 Aurora laptop that came with 1 dead pixel, then had 2-3 more by the end of it's short life before it fried it's mobo without any overclocking and I had to sell if for parts for all of $400. What a piece. Never again. Never have seen a dead pixel before or since.
