Yes my GPU has proven faulty and the situation got worse with full pc lockups, restarts and crashes every few hours with the same errors, I contacted the manufacturer for a replacement and got it granted.
This is actually a "common" issue. It is often a sign of faulty design or the temp controller being broken. I had the same issue with my old 2080 (I also got it replaced, with a better card even)
So if people experience those symptoms and can´t control the fans via ie afterburner, then most likely the GPU is faulty.
Sometimes it's the simpler solution to just re-install!
Have you tried using Asus GPU Tweak II instead of Afterburner?
It is a little different, but you can do everything the same as with Afterburner.
I usually use the software of the GPU I have. I currently have an EVGA card so I use EVGA Precision. When I had an ASUS card I used GPU Tweak. If I had MSI I would use Afterburner.
Just realized this was an old post, lol, but anyway if OP still has issues do what the last post said or try GPU Tweak or even Precision.
I tried ASUS GPU Tweak, same result, ignoring the settings.
I traded the ASUS ROG card for a Gigabyte Aorus xtreme, going to fit it today, hopefully this card will behave.
Ok, must of been the card then. Just out of curiosity, I am sure you are, but your are putting the fan speed on auto and making sure that the fan control curve checkbox is checked?
yep I have even been manually setting the fans myself and forcing the card to stay at a certain speed which works until it hits that threshold and then it ignores it.
I have only had one card not have rogue fans and that was a blower type card I had as my first replacement, I did not keep it though as it would not stay under 87c and was even creeping into 89c and 90c which was unacceptable and so noisy.
fingers crossed for this gigabyte model, I will report how it is for anyones curiosity.
I do feel if this card has a fan issue too it may be something more than just being unlucky and having bad cards, but we will see.
It is a known issue with Asus gpu´s my new card (replacement for the old 2080) now does the same.. it is free gpu´s (I reckon I get a new 3070 or similar when they are in stock) but it is darn annoying. The censors is to blame it seems
I don´t think it will be a issue with Gigabyte, sadly they are not as silent or as good quality as a (ie) Asus rog strix, but what matters, is that they function !
Heres my update:
After having my Gigabyte model for a few days I can agree its a problem with ASUS models only. I have had no problem with these fans on this GPU and its running great, quiet too (although I'm not a great judge of that).
By default the fans stay off until around 55c then they kick in, it usually only runs fans at about 80% speed when hitting 80c so it tends to be getting quite hot and sitting around low 80s in demanding games, I might need to put a custom fan curve on it to try to keep it lower, maybe 100% fans at 80? not sure. Any ideas for a good curve to try is welcome.
but anyway to my delight though its not blasting fans full at 60c or 70c so I think this model is fine. ASUS must have defect censors or something in their cards, really put me off buying future ASUS cards.
Asus pretty much confirmed this to me and my retailer said that they have these issues a lot with the 20xx series.
This is so much of an issue, that they replaced my 2080s (that was replaced back in 2020 from a 2080) to a now 3060ti (it actually runs better than my old 2080s)
Ofc still the same Rog Strix, but there is no issue and even with high performance, I never go above 60 degree´s now (no sound either from fans)
Hopefully it is no issue with these new 30th generation cards.
I just think it is funny, that the premium cards from Asus have this issue, when one of their selling points is low temperatur and low noise.
False advertising
I just think they have made some design mistakes or had bad censors on some of the cards, it happens, I reckon that is why they just "replace" with no questions asked.
I don´t complain ofc, I just got a new 3060ti with 3 year warranty again, for free.
I probably would have done if I went through ASUS for warranty rather than the store I got the PC from. I'm happy with my Gigabyte2080 ti though as long as it works without any issues.
Most of the bigger brands are fine tbh. It is often a matter of "bias" but the actual difference on the cards and their respective tiers, are pretty much equal in performance, noice level etc. "normal" people would not care about these factor ^^
Hopefully your Gigabyte 2080 ti will serve you well
