What to do with spare SSHD?
Hello there,

TL;DR: I have a spare SSHD lying around. Seems like a waste to not use it, but it also has a somewhat high failure rate (not reliable enough?). Any Ideas?

For more than half a Year I had been using a Seagate Firecuda SSHD as a internal drive in my PS4. A few Months ago it failed, and a few weeks back I have finally been sent a replacement.
The thing is, after reading more into it, I discovered that this specific drive seems to fail rather often, even though many Articles/Tutorials/Ads claim, that this is a good drive to not just expand the storage, but also get slight loading improvements. Right now, i have put back the default HDD into the PS4.
Even the Seagate Support claimed, that some PS4 models don't give it enough power, resulting in eventual data lost/failure.

My Questions:
-Any experiences with SSHD's?
-Should I just put it into my Desktop for PC Gaming?
-Using it as a External Ps4 Drive, foreseable failure? The same with putting it back inside and loading the PS4 OS onto it?

I have one for 2 years

First year I use it for gaming , all my game are on the SSHD
Second year, stock all my data.

I have 0 problems and the disk is "healthy"

You can use it for game storage if you want just don't use it for storing important data if you think it might fail on you.

I am using an old ST1000DX001 (the original non-firecuda Seagate SSHD, 1Tb) so far 21.3K hours and still chugging as a game drive in my main rig.
Have also used the firecuda 1Tb and 2Tb in laptops, have not seen any premature failures yet either

Based on this:

might not be a bad idea

Well the external caddy is probably providing good power, where putting it back in the PS4 might give power problems again, I would either leave it as an external SSHD or just put it in the game PC where it will have less chance to fail

best use for a sshd is in a ps3 or ps4, they had a hdd as default, sshd needs slightly less power

super easy to backup the user data to another drive (usb)
swap in the sshd
download the os install file to another usb stick, plug it in
power on the ps3/4
wait for it to update and go to the backup/restore menu and restore user data from usb
enjoy a much faster ps3/4
