Are realtek audio/mic drivers better than the Microsoft ones?

They are different. Realtek might have more options.

Microsoft has no Realtek drivers. Windows update distributes drivers that have been submitted to Microsoft by Realtek and meet WHQL standards and testing.

Windows update drivers: held to higher standard, more likely to be stable.
Straight from manufacturer: possibly newer, but not guaranteed to Microsoft's standards of reliability.

That said, with older hardware the Windows update version is often the same as the one on the company's site.

if its using hdmi from the intel hd, it needs to use the intel hd auido driver
eles the onboard ports will be the realtek

both are similar and will work for basic audio tasks
The standard Microsoft driver is just whats needed to get the device to work
The actual Driver is what tends to have features and options that the standard wont have.

So yes, installing the actual driver is usually beneficial.

drivers ms grabs one 'compatbile' with hardware, very rarely correct
they works good enough to get the correct ones
