MS paint in windows 11
So, i just ran the pc health check to find out, that i can ideed dual boot windows 11 and manjaro linux, but a minute ago i found this article online:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/windows-11-microsoft-starts-rolling-out-beautifully-redesigned-paint-app/ar-AAOXa1v

They redesigned paint.
I thought that i could just upgrade to win11 in couple of days just like that and keep making my weekly-ish stickmins.
But they redesigned PAINT.
Your peoples opinion about that change?
I think, they should keep the old paint, and make it optional so you are not forced to use it.
I really don't know if i should upgrade to win11 now that this is out :steammocking:

There's nothing special or sacred about older versions of MS Paint. And no reason to keep it around because some people hate change.

Heaven help us if they add anything to Notepad... I can hear the wailing already.

Windows 10 have 3D paint, so maybe they will intigrade it.

It looks less changed between Windows 7 and there than it did between Windows XP and Windows 7. The changes look good but I haven't tried it firsthand.

As do I, yet I use Paint also. It''s great for pasting screen captures into but that's all I use it for.

Have you ever looked at Paint.NET? it's pretty spartan like MS Paint, but has a few decent features that make it leagues better.

Basically Paint.NET is to MS Paint as Notepad++ is to Notepad.

just save a copy your old version and run that instead

idk why Windows has notepad, paint, word, mail, maps, solitaire, cortana, calendar, feedback hub, "get help", people, contacts, your phone, xbox, weather.. etc... it's just bloatware that would be better off being optional.

They are updating paint? The audacity!

I think some basic apps are good and shouldn't be classified as bloat, like notepad and paint. Things like cortana should in my opinion be optional, though I guess they should also be easy to install and setup.

Along with Paint, Windows Media Player is also getting re-done, it seems.

I wouldn't do it, unless you know for a fact all you want to do simple sketchwork or whatever. If you're going to start from scratch and get good then you want to just start and invest in one strong application. If you get good with mspaint, then you'll be stopped dead in your tracks the minute you need to do anything even semi-advanced. That's always been the case with Microsoft built in software.

I agree that not all features are bloat to the same degree, but it is sort of subjective. Maybe a "plug-in" alike approach where the base OS is on its own and you select what you want and don't want would be ideal, although this would add time to installation. You could sort of work around this by having presets and the funny thing is, Microsoft already has been doing the whole "optional" thing for a few things for many, many years, but they never extended it that far. Unless something is built into the OS (Cortana, Exlorer/Edge), they could already do this with not much change.

These basic programs were included at a time where the internet wasn't as widespread and needs were different, so you more needed basic functionality included to open a word file or an image. These days, offering them but giving the user the choice to refuse is better, but... we all know since Windows 8/10 Microsoft has been wanting to take choice away, not give it, and with Windows 11 showing the changes to default programs and removal of moving the task bar location, it looks like they are continuing along that path and not turning away.

There is Windows 10 Pro N "The N editions don't include Windows Media Player, Skype, or certain preinstalled media apps (Music, Video, Voice Recorder)"

All those apps can still be installed later through powershell or the "add features" panel, but there is still a whole lot of other stuff that just sits there, never to be used by the user.

If they just installed the basic system, then after install had a checkbox list of extra things to add it would be much better.

Yeah, people will have many different opinions. Like I had a friend who got really excited when he discovered he could control his PC with his voice (though I don't remember how well it worked). Technically it could be considered bloat, but at the same time my friend thought it was awesome, even in the imperfect state it was in at that time (personally I didn't mind it either, it was cool to see). I think a plug-in approach would allow for having your cake and eating it, since then you could have an advanced Windows installation option for the users that care. For everyone else you just get the standard Windows features. At least for me that would be the ideal approach, but as you pointed out, these kind of things are subjective.

Didn't think of the point about the internet tbh, it's a good point. Times change I guess. And I do not like the direction Microsoft is heading, I like choice.

I didn't think about that either. Very true. First computer I had was an IBM Aptiva. I think it had a 2 GB hdd and 8 or 16 MB ram. My internet was so crappy (lived in a rural area) that when I went to a local college I would take advantage of internet speed and download a bunch of Winamp skins (like 100-300kb each) to floppy disks to take home.
