About anti-aliasing.
I hope I spelled that correctly and I hope this has not been asked before...

But what is the difference between FXAA, TAA, MSAA and other options many games now have? What is the best one to chose and does it matter when going above 1080p.

I know it removes the jagged edges of the screen, but that is about it.

Thanks in advance.

(If this is in the wrong forum, please move thank you.)

FXAA is the least performance hit on the GPU. its slightly removed jaggies but it doesnt completely remove them

TAA uses slightly more power of the GPU but adds a slight blurry effect to the screen and greatly reduces jaggies and object shimmering.

MSAA is very taxing and requires a beefy GPU as it renders above the target resolution and then down samples it to gives you a much smoother looking game. its the best out of the 3 but also the biggest hit on performance.

and finally resolution. it will remove almost all of jaggies the higher you push the resolution but can completely cripple the games performance if the GPU isnt capable

They are extra filters basically, turning them off will improve performance, turning them on will have impact on your PC at the cost of performance. So, use it if your PC can handle it.

I know that it will impact performance. But is it worth it at higher resolutions? And which filter is the best one? Right now I use FXAA @ 1080p mostly. If it is available.

its the method they use for blending pixels to make jaggies go away

It becomes less and less necessary the higher you're resolution is, it also can make the image blurry so its all about personal preference on which method of aa to use

I guess I'll stick to FXAA then on most games. It does not really make the games more blurry, it is supposed to make them look sharper but I might drops this when I start playing at 1440p.

It really depends on the game, often you need to "fiddle" a bit with those filters to see what you like most.

As long as it won't tax my 3070 card too much . But I don't even play that many demanding games at the moment.

I do not know about your full specs, but your 3070 can handle it with ease.

Specs are (as of tomorrow, since for now I am making space for it and cleaning up):
Corsair 5000D Airflow TG bk ATX
CC-9011210-WW
Intel Core i7-11700K 3600 1200 BOX
MSI MPG Z590 GAMING CARBON WIFI
Z590
D432GB 3200-16 Vengeance LPX K4 COR
Asus 8GB D6 RTX 3070 TUF GAMING OC V2
SSD 250GB 1.3/2.9G 980 M.2 SAM
SSD 2TB 530/560 870 QVO SA3 SAM
Corsair RM850 850W ATX24
Corsair Fan ML120 bk

And the sad person I am I'm not gonna attempt 4K with this setup...I'll stick to 1440p at most.
I do not think a 3070 card is even suited for 4K gaming ...

Interesting, almost the same PC as my gf, and she only plays the Sims 2.

Nice PC, you should not be worried about anything, you can virtually play anything with everything at max with no apparent issues.

Thank you, that was the goal ... To not have to worry about any more settings and I don't mind playing at 1440p or even 1080p.

I do have a slight concern with only playing the sims 2 on such a system but hey :)
