Got a 4k TV (LG CX) but don't see the big deal, am i doing something wrong?

I've been gaming on my 1440p 165hz monitor for about 5 years now. I recently moved to a new appartment and got myself a LG CX because i heard it's one of the best options for 4K gaming out there.

Now, i got myself a HDMi to use the TV as an extended monitor, everything set to 4k.

However when launching games from my PC, making sure they get displayed on the TV and resolution is set to 4k. I don't notice any clear image at all... Like... My 1440p monitor is WAY more crisp and clear than the games on the 4k TV.

So am i doing something wrong? Am i missing something?

Two things to consider. First the the size of the TV and pixel density compared to your monitor.

Second, diminishing returns. At a certain point doubling the number of pixels is hardly noticeable because the starting point is already so high.

How far away are you sitting from your TV? There is a maximum distance (dependent on the screen size) beyond which you will not see a difference between say, 2160p and 1440p. Check out the chart in this article:

TV is 55 inch, sitting about 3 meters away from it. Doesn't look as clear as i thought it would look... my 1440p monitor looks much more clear.

However, when i view a 4k youtube video it's MUCH clearer than a 1440p youtube video on my monitor.

how big was your monitor?

the monitor problably has a more dense pixel count.

27 inch 1440p monitors have naturally better picture quality because it has higher PPI (pixel per inch) count than the 55 inch 4k display. Your 4k TV is actually a downgrade.

27 inch 1440 x 2560 = 108 PPI
55 inch 2160 x 3840 (4k) = 80 PPI

Others already said it. Pixel density. Your 4K TV will probably look great if you view it from a distance, like across the room from the couch with a controller in your hands.

Pixel density is why 800p is fine for the 7" Steam Deck screen, but not for your 32" PC monitor.

Actual monitors will almost always look better than using a TV because of pixel density.

Well there is.. Witcher 3 goes from 80 fps on my TV running @ 1440p to 40 fps running @ 4k.

50% decrease in framerate and i can't notice a single difference in the sharpness or clarity of the image. So what is the big deal of 4K when the performance drop is HUGE for almost no visible difference from 1440p. And i don't mean 1440p on a monitor but on the TV...

Not everyone can notice the difference between 1440p vs 4k. Especially when it's viewed from a distance, and also need a good eyesight. You will notice the difference if you compare the both panel SIDE BY SIDE from 2 feet distance and look carefully, you will see one is SLIGHTLY blurry and pixeletated than the other.

At 3m you'll probably only notice the drop at 1080p.

Also, make sure you have your TV actually showing full 4:4:4 hdr 120Hz at 4k I went through 6 cables trying to find a 3m cable actually capable of it (not all hdmi 2.1 cables are equal despite what the specs say it appears).

For me, on my 86 inch TV I sit about 3m back so I can't pick out the pixels at 1440p still which is great if I need more fps in stuff like cp2077 where 4k is a bad experience.

For me it was about getting a desk type experience and immersion with the screen filling my field of vision as if I was sitting infront a regular monitor but with the comfort of the couch something my old 65 inch 4k TV couldn't do (plus 120Hz).

But, yeah, you won't notice a world if difference in clarity.

What good would that do? If there us any issue beyond op being underwhelmed it won't show on a video.
