any htib with a digital input (spdif or hdmi) will also work better than any 2.1 pc speaker set
Which ones are there, from a good, well-known brand? How much better would a subwoofer really be when such speakers have fairly large kevlar woofers?
That way you won't bother your neighbours!
It wouldn't be that loud at all, but even if it was, I honestly couldn't care less for reasons that I could go on about all day, so I rather wouldn't. I wouldn't like wearing headphones all day and I find them inconvenient.
center and fronts are most important
get good rear/side sets
decent sub 8+in (75+w) is enough for a small room
one like this would destroy the logitech z 5.1 setups

I've had Bose Companion 2 Series 2 speakers for donkeys years and they give a beautiful sound, albeit only stereo and no sub. Plenty of bass available without the sub, but obviously isn't to a floor shaking level. Cheap(ish) too, if you can find them.
Don't buy the Series 3 Companion 2's though - I've heard them and they actually sound worse than the previous generation ones.
So called computer speakers are all junk.

i have a klipsch promedia ulltra 5.1. quite possibly the best pc sound system ever made (2003) best $400 i ever spent on PC stuff, and it still works and sounds excellent. guess this was in a period when PC sound systems were pretty more widely available than they are now. it's more of a niche now since most people aren't going to pay $300+ for a good pc sound system.
I still have a set of those and yes they are great even still. The Logitech 500 watt offerings are equally as good as the Klipsch Ultra 5.1 (no longer made now for many yeara) and anyones best option if 600+ $ isn't a budget you can do for a receiver + speakers. And newer gen Logitech speaker models support things like Optical Toslink and BT, not just 3x Analog 3.5mm
I've had these for 5 or 6 years now and they seem good. I'm no audiophile and rather uneducated when it comes to sound systems... but these sound great and were cheap when I bought them.($120)
I end up having the volume knob on the speakers at the halfway mark then set the PC volume to ~40. Anything louder is too much and even when I max it at 100 for jams, I can still turn up the speakers themselves which is crazy to me lol. Sound seems clear but as I said, not an audiophile so I might be a filthy plebeian that thinks crap sound is good.

I wanted something by Polk Audio ofr Klipsch, couldn't afford them, so went with this instead. Satisfied considering what I paid (about the same price, but two years ago). Bass is very good for the size, highs are not tinny. If you really want thumpin' bass, though, you should definitely be looking at something with a sub-woofer.
