Will an RTX 3080 founders edition have a dramatic difference compared to after market?
I want to order it as soon as its available as I've been waiting to upgrade my 1080 and I dont want to wait for after market cards which will likely cost £100+ more and likely sell out fast.

Is there usually a downside to getting the founders cards? The cooling seems alright to me, but I see a lot of people say founders editions are slower, run hotter and they're louder and generally a bad idea. Am I really going to see such dramatic differences realisticaly to make the founders edition a bad buy?

This isn't a blower design though is it? Looks like a normal dual fan design you'd see in after market cards, just placed unusually and they did invest a lot into a new cooling solution so I guess it can't be compared to previous founders cards

I think its better than normal designs. Normal coolers would usually push air through a heatsink, towards the pcb, where it would hit a solid wall (the pcb) and scatter in random directions, which is not ideal.

With nvidias new coolers, the fans still push air through a heatsink, but then instead of hitting a solid wall (the pcb), it passes right through, which is much better.
Edit: Well, one fan does that. The other still blows into the pcb, but its still an improvement.

Some of the aftermarket designs do this too. The Gigabyte ones do. There is a big hole in the backplate and it allows air to pass right through. The aftermarket folk seem to have taken the basic idea nvida introduced and hopefully will take it further. Most of them are three fan designs.
Founders cards are almost all I have ever had. My 770 FE did 125+ core 650+ memory My FE 1070 did 140+ core 780+ memory and now 2080 FE 140+ core 1200+ memory and runs quite and cool as a cucumber.Founders cards are built to be the benchmark cards for performance/stability ratio and prime candidates for complete control over OC. After market cards usually already hav the snot clocked out of them,so not much room to OC and run hotter with noisier fans running more often. And yes not all the time, but more often than not it seems

Would you say its a good idea to get the founders cards then?

Its just my personal opinion.Yes,if anyone can get it right, the Gpu manufacturer can right?
Anyone free to chime in,but I would say Founder's cards do run a little more on the practical side for users who just plug and play. In the latter years they are realizing a lot of people overclock, but even so they leave a generous amount of headroom, and now have several auto overclocking options. After market cards tend to push these limits, and that's where you see some complaining about x card running hot,and can't overclock more than say 30mhz on the core and 250 to the memory before artifacting,or just unstable.Best bet if you want a partner card is to wait for the reviews, and see how conservative they are on the clocks, and that heat isn't an issue.Otherwise I would say go for the FE and hope they have all our drivers and good cooling, because I am going to get the 3080 myself FE as soon as they are out

I have a pretty good feeling about their new cooling system or at least I'm hopeful that it's good and I don't OC my cards neither, I just want to plug and play so yeah I think it's a good deal for me personally as long as it performs well and has good cooling. I don't need or want to spend like £150-£200 more for 5% performance gain for an after market gpu

Right, and some people like myself go for non rgb cards, mine doesn't have bells or whistles on it and I'm fine with that.If I was going for a real flashy build,I might want some decked out after market card,or If it offered a superior cooling solution

Having the product be RGB shouldn't be something you need to look at and go, "I don't like rgb, I'll avoid that"

Rgb is simply standard on certain things, like many gpus. If you don't like it, turn it to a static color, or turn it off.
Don't get it,I like Rgb:) I have Zroyal ram
But all I was saying is,if a person can live without lights extra fans, different shrouds etc, then Fe is just fine
If do not wish to OC or care about the lighting, yes an FE is fine.

Why not wish to overclock??Factory cooling?Because my cards were excellent overclockers, all founders cards

I'd just wait for the 3rd party cards. For other cooling designs and OC ability

Already coming:

Once again, who says you can't overclock FE cards well?
I know way better first hand.I have seen ore than several times Nvidia's reference design matched, and in some cases beat aftermarket cards. However I do understand that aftermarket cards do sometimes offer a more robust power delivery, and if you want to squeeze every ounce of juice from a card. Also that extra power is supplying more fans to cool from the fact it is already oc'd from the manufacturer and runs warm from the get go.
