Windows 10 won't boot from USB
So I downloaded windows 10 from my computer to a usb. Every time I got an error that prevented it from ever actually installing on the usb. Figured there was something wrong with my laptop so I got another laptop (a macbook) and downloaded the installer there onto the usb successfully. However, when I plug it in my PC and boot from it, it just comes up with a black screen with a flashing underscore _ . Any help? Is it because I did the download from a mac?

- Try a different USB port. Make sure it's a 2.0 port.
- Remove all devices except for the flash drive from the boot order and disable network boot.
- Try booting from the flash drive both in UEFI and Legacy mode. This can be done in the boot menu, the flash drive should be listed twice in the boot menu.
- You can try switching the BIOS from UEFI to Legacy.

*If the OS is installed in Legacy you will have to switch to UEFI later to get the best performance.

- Try a different flash drive.

I'll definitely try these once I get the chance but just for future reference, how would I switch the UEFI to Legacy (and what is legacy)? I have an ASRock Killer x370 for my motherboard.

And could this simply be an issue because I downloaded the software on a mac instead of a normal pc?
You must format the USB to a bootable FAT32 then put whatever you want on it..

+1, if its not a bootable drive it will not boot.

Igloo, Carl,

It's been formatted to FAT32 and still nothing.
Are you downloading the source from the official MS website? There's always a chance of corrupted data from some 3rd party locations.

Yes, directly from MS
I don't know if this is relevant, but I went to launch from the "instant flash" and it started going through what looks like my usb and it pops up with an error that says "no image file detected"

Try it like this. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Create-a-Bootable-USB-Drive-Without-Using-A/
Came across an error saying "DiskPart has referenced an object which is not up-to-date.
Refresh the object by using the RESCAN command."

I think I'm just going to re format it, download the media creation from a different computer tomorrow and try again.
have you tried using rufus to build the windows 10 bootable usb installer?
idk if it has a mac version but using a windows pc would take less than 30 minutes.

No u dont; and u dont want FAT32 anymore; thats dead.

Download JUST the ISO; do the rest with RUFUS
Which will do everything else properly after selecting the ISO within RUFUS

Easiest way is with Rufus, where you can pick using the legacy MBR partition or GPT for newer UEFI BIOS (which is probably what you need).

Best guide showing the difference is here[tinkertry.com], legacy (older) BIOS need MBR partition with NTFS filesystem and newer BIOS needs GPT parition with FAT32 filesystem.
You don't need to pick any options; Load up Rufus and add that newly downloaded Win10 ISO to what you're creating your backup off of; by selecting an OS based ISO such as this, what/how your USB Flash Drive is then formatted, will properly by dictated by this ISO, based around your Motherboard.

Example:

^This Motherboard only has a Legacy BIOS (non-UEFI)
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
Every option listed was auto-filled out after adding the ISO as what I will be backing up / formatting the USB flash drive with. The USB device here is a USB Flash Card Reader Adapter w/ MicroSD 16GB installed.

So right now what I'm attempting to do is create a recovery disk from my laptop and use that to hopefully install windows.
