So upon browsing the internwebs I found that I need a DVI cable to operate 1920x1280 @ 144hz.
My issue:
I have an Alienware Laptop that only has a HDMI in-put port.
My question:
Will a DVI - HDMI (male) cable solve this issue? Or am I looking at possibly building a PC just so I can get the full potential out of my $600 at the time monitor?
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

If your Laptop and Monitor support HDMI 2.0 then you'll get 144Hz. Using HDMI-DVI adapter wont work I dont think

HDMI, unless 2.0, is limited to 1980x1080@60Hz. And you’d need DVI-D.

All nvidea cards above 1050 support 144hz , this I already knew lol :D

Even if OP only gets 60/72 on a 144hz display they wil benefit. Hell 144hz on the desktop will feel much smoother. In games with Vsync off I've never noticed screen tearing unless fps dropped below 30. Screen refreshes that fast it can draw another image before you notice. Not all the time but much better than a 60 hz screen.

Either way 144hz for competitve games and lower graphics settings to achieve 144fps and for none competitve crank settings up as high as you want to make them look as good as you can while getting 60/72 fps.

Since I own pretty much the same one, I did try several different cables that where HDMI to dual link and such and none of them where able to give more than 60hz. Even a HDMI cable wasn't able to get over 60hz for me. You need a DVI dual link cable, to get 144hz.

That's what I experienced when trying different cables.

I own the exact model. DVI-D is the only way to get 144hz on it.

HDMI 1.4b and above is capable of 1080p @144hz Maybe the cable/adpater you tried wasn't HDMI 1.4 or above.

If OP can find a HDMI 1.4 (or higher) cable or adapter to DVI-D it may work. It might not but trying with HDMI spec lower than 1.4 definitely won't work.

No such thing as a HDMI 1.4 cable, it is the port only.
