How do you turn off the vive trackers without them trying to pair and turning on steam vr?

I'm holding down the tracker button for several seconds but it opts to start blinking like it's trying to pair, then steam VR opens but after a second the tracker does turn off. Is there a way to turn off the tracker without steamvr turning on? I want them to be off when I charge them, because if they're anything like the controllers, they won't actually charge while turned on
