Hey people

I have a 240hz monitor with gsync, my pc can get more than 240 fps in the games i play so should i leave vsync and gsync off or enable one or both?

thanks

I see no reason not to have it on. Vsync can decrease performance below your refresh rate and screen tearing still absolutely happens below your refresh rate as well.

Keep G-Sync on and and enable Vsync on a per-game basis(mostly just when you want to cap the framerate).

I always leave gsync on. Vsync depends on the game. There's not a universally right configuration though.

gsync/freesync on in gpu control panel
vsync off in games

If you have both enabled in nvidia controll panel v-sync act only as frame limiter. As long gsnyc is activ its always prioritized higher then v-sync.

For a perfect strait frametime line i would use rtss and cap my frames at 240fps with gsync enabled.

There are a million opinions about this on the internet. Why can't Nvidia themselves just say what should be done? (I presume they haven't because there's nothing in the manual, nothing in the Control Panel popup help, nothing comes up in searches, and nothing is ever linked to in these types of discussions.) Why do these lazy, enormous companies leave the internet to battle it out rather than bother to document their products properly!

Because this is PC and not console. You have multible options like gsync, vsync, fast sync, adeptiv sync etc. There are 1000s of sides which shows and tells you which does what and you call companies lazy? Ok fine ;)

There is no "what should be done" because every option has pro and con. Btw nvidia themself tells you everything you need to know about gsync, fast sync etc. Its not hard to find and they hide nothing, even for lazy people.

You're correct - the way to PROPERLY use G-sync, as directed by Nvidia, is to use G-sync with Vsync.
The FPS cap doesn't really matter much, since Vsync will prevent you going higher than 240FPS anyway. However, it's much smoother with an FPS cap.
But it doesn't need to be as far away from the max refresh as you said - only 2 FPS off the max is all you need to do, with a good frame limiter like RTSS, or the one built into Nvidia drivers.

They did at one point, G-sync used to force Vsync on, but iirc some people complained(?) and later on they removed it, allowing people to decide if they want Vsync on as a seperate feature.

While there is some information on what is the CORRECT usage of G-sync, it's nice that they allow you to control it all. I like that, even if you have to go out of your way to find out how to properly use the feature.

At the very least, with G-sync, one has to limit framerate so you get smooth frametimes - otherwise you're going to get stutters (from frametime variances, of say 11.11ms-8.33ms (90-120 fps)), you will feel it on the monitor, so a (properly) framerate limited experience would remove those stutters.
(You can also get some other issues due to frametime variance with G-sync, like if the frametimes are vastly different, then you will get visual tearing - that's why Vsync should be used too, but I personally haven't had a problem without it.)
