nVidia PhysX White Screen with Mass Effect 2
Yesterday out of the blue I got the message, "Failed to initialize the physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the PhysX System Software installed." upon loading up Mass Effect 2.
I looked online and saw a post to repair it in the Control Panel. I did not see an option to so I uninstalled it and then downloaded the same version - 9.09.0814 - from the internet. Upon trying to load the game I got the white screen of death. I could hear the game running but my cursor was a continuous loading circle. I could not alt-tab, I could not close the program using ctrl-alt-delete. The only option was to restart my computer.
I then tried to update PhysX to the latest version - 9.19.0218 - alongside the legacy version - 9.13.0604 - for games 2007 and earlier. Got the white screen again. I uninstalled 9.19 and got the message that the version I was using needed updating. I went looking online some more and came across the suggestion to use 9.09.0814 and 9.11.1107 together. Got white screen again.
I then came across another post to update nVidia and intel drivers so I did that to intel igfx_win10_100.8190 and nVidia 445.87-desktop-win10-64bit-international-dch-whql. Both are the latest versions as of yesterday. Then I uninstalled all PhysX versions and reinstalled 9.09.0814 from the game directory and restarted the computer. I got the white screen again.
Today I continued looking around for suggestions and saw a post on here to press alt-enter on startup. That didn't work. Neither did ctrl-enter or shift-enter.
I am at a complete loss. Every post I have come across has the same problem I have only the solutions listed in them, the same ones I have tried, have not worked for me. Each time I load the game I get the white screen and each time the only thing I can do is restart my computer. Reinstalling the game did not help either.
My system specs are:
Windows 10 Home
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @ 2.6GHz 2.59 GHz
RAM: 32 GB
System: 64 bit
Video Card: nVidia Geforce RTX 2070
I need help. Please!

EDIT: I get no sound. I thought I did but it was not the game I was hearing.

Run the PhysX installer that is included in the Mass Effect 2 installation folder (in the _Installer subfolder). Choose "Repair PhysX." That should be it.
Well
its a laptop so its probably trying to run on integrated which doesnt have NVIDIA PhysX instead of the NVIDIA GPU

Pre download the latest Notebook NVIDIA driver

Then download and Use DDU in safe mode to clean uninstall the drivers and PhysX (In DDU settings make sure PhysX is also selected to be uninstalled), When DDU asks to disable automatic driver installs accept it.

When installing the driver choose Driver Only, then Custom Install, only install the Driver and PhysX nothing else to avoid possible conflicts. Yes, that means dont install GFE.

After which, make sure the laptops power settings within Windows is set to High Performance when plugged in, then within the NVIDIA CP make sure the 2070 is set to be used.

Installing a previous old as hell version of PhysX will not fix it, the game not detecting your 2070 is whats causing it so thats what needs to be resolved.

Looked online for that version. I uninstalled my other version, installed 9.12 and restarted before trying to load the game. Sadly, it did not work. I still got the white screen and had to restart. Thank you for offering a solution :)

Tried that. Uninstalled current version, reinstalled from game folder, repaired from Control Panel (figured out how), and then restarted computer. Tried to load the game and got the white screen again and had to restart. Thank you for replying though :)

Okay, this one is going to be more trickier to try so it is going to take me a while to get through. I am using a laptop. I downloaded the latest nVidia drivers yesterday but I will look for notebook versions just in case they are different. I don't know what DDU, GPU, GFE, or CP stand for so I need to start there and figure those out so I can use the 'DDU in safe mode'. :D Thank you for replying! I will respond again when I have made some progress. :)

DDU is a program to uninstall drivers cleanly so you don't have bits still left behind after uninstalling.

GPU is your graphics card.

GFE is Geforce Experience (NVIDIA bloatware according to a lot of users).

CP is the Nvidia Control Panel.

You will need to type in the Run box (Press Windows Key + R) msconfig and then select the Boot tab, tick Safe Boot to tell Windows to go to safe mode and apply.

After rebooting run the DDU program to cleanly uninstall the Nvidia Drivers before running the Nvidia Driver exe to reinstall the drivers for your graphics.

You need to look for 2070 (Notebook) drivers for your particular instance.
only had to install 2 things.. latest physx system software and physx legacy drivers (theres a link on the page of the system software. with those 2 I can run ANY game that requires physx old and new.

physx software will either run on cpu or nvidia gpu but never on integrated graphics ;) afaik you can change/select which one to use in the physx control panel app.

Thank you very much for the detailed instructions and explanation! They were very easy to follow. I found the proper notebook drivers and the DDU program and booted in and out of safe mode to install and reinstall everything. Unfortunately, I am still having the same problem. I was so very hopeful that your suggestion would work. Silver lining is that I know a lot more about my laptop now! Thank you again for trying to help. I hope that this solution will help someone else if they are having the same problem. :)

I tried installing both the physx legacy driver and the latest version. While they will both show up in Programs in the Control Panel, for some reason the legacy drivers takes priority and the game will not detect the latest version so I get the error message telling me to update. I cannot figure out how to change the one to use in the nViida settings control panel. There does not seem to be an option and I cannot find a Physx control app. Very confusing. Thank you for the reply though. I appreciate it. :)
just had a thought. not sure if this will help with the issue but more like a general hint.as far as I remember the game needs to run as admin at least once / at first launch so it can register properly. have you done that?
