Can faulty harddrive damage other pc components?
My info is backed up, so I don’t mind the hard drive dying; I’m just worried that the harddrive might take down some other components with it...

probably the Power Supply could get roasted if there is like something going on with the electricity but that would be really surprising to be honest.

Not really, the drive will either work or not. If it has bad sectors or trouble showing up on system boot sometimes, replace it.

So my cpu, gpu, and motherboard are safe?

If people are saying that is safe, don't worry then let it be on them. I am telling you that leaving a piece of faulty hardware attached to your motherboard and power supply is never a good idea. Now let the backlash begin.

This little trouble maker called a dead short can arise. And then, poof there goes the magical smoke

Don't worry, it will not happen. It's totally safe to use near dead drive.

Think about this: millions of drives fail every year. This always happens while the computer is on. Just me had hundreds of devices failed in last years. But none of them caused the PC to break down. Manufacturers KNOW all they discs inevitable fail sooner or later. They design them such way that this couldn't cause any troubles.

I won't argue. Go luck OP. But before i move on,remember this guys. No one asked him specific details such as,how is it attached, and what kind it is,ext supply etc. Then without question you all say,no prob go for it. I said nope, not a good Idea without questioning him and drawing it out. I too did not beat a dead horse. My way Is if not anything just covering bases quickly, besides do you think there is a great reason OP needs to keep a non functioning piece of hardware hanging on for an extended amount of time??

You said your info is backed up,so if I were you get a 7500 rpm Hdd from new egg 4 Tb for like 50-70 bucks

Yea listen to someone who has had hundreds of devices fail in a few years:/

Well you seem to ignore my first post where is absolutely say that a something could happen but the chancea are basically null.

Anyway..

You forgot to ask how many computers we have (I said about my work, not my home PCs)

Anyone involved with hundreds of failures within a year likely has a very, very large sampling size they're working with, and also likely isn't repeatedly causing the failures themselves due to user error.
XxzodazZ 2020 年 8 月 31 日 上午 6:27
No I understand I was a bit hard on everyone And I get that under certain circumstances someone who has a business or many many computers are going to have hardware failures that could number in the hundreds throughout the year. But I still stand by what I said. No matter what,it is not at all good practice,or wise to without much question tell anyone it is OK to leave faulty hardware hooked up to a pc. When in the event he said ok thank you,and his computer took a dive, who is he going to blame? Possibly everyone on a Steam forum telling him.hey it's no problem. Looks bad on everyone, even the Steam community itself. And to be honest with OP,you should really have been able to answer this your self. You know YOU are responsible for your computer, not us.If you ask someone if something is ok,and it's not you could only cast blame on someone else. Again just save up and buy a new one, they are cheap you will be safe, and no more worries

Skunk, you're not wrong. There's a way to share your experience and not get a lot of pushback. Trying to rely on an argument from authority when a lot of other users consider themselves authorities is a recipe for the backlash you expected.

OP, if you believe the HDD is dying, why wouldn't you remove it? Or rather what benefit do you plan on getting by running it until it dies? Regardless of how small any risks might be.

depends on how bad the drive is

bad data or corrupt os can rarely cause other hardware issues
worst in that situation is a unstable software oc on cpu/gpu or disabled fans
(but modern cpus and gpus will throttle when at their max temps)

if its dead due to bad sectors or unreliable, the pc will work fine with it plugged in, the drive just will not be usable

if its physically damaged (head stuck to platter) and keeps trying to spin up, it will constantly draw power, which can make it run hot or add more load to the psu
worst case, if its mosfets shorted, it will cause a dead short on the psu, and may prevent the pc from turning on, or it will turn on and blow them open, may start a fire

if you do not want to pull the bad drive, atleast unplug its data and power cables, and write or put a sticker on it so you know its bad
