Thinking about a gaming desktop
Hey there. I'm thinking about getting a gaming desktop at some point. I've looked around online and I've found 3 options that I like and I wanted to see if they were any good. I'm not good with computers when it comes to understanding what hardware is good and bad so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Anyway here are the computers I'm looking at. For context I like to game a lot and I do video editing and content creation but not at the same time. Which of these would be my best bet?
Looking at budget under 1,500 usd, DIY using amd parts where possible.

Yes waiting for cyber monday would be a good idea for getting pc parts if you do go with the rtx 2060 super ($400) or rtx 2070 super ($500). They would be cheaper, but I'll say just get the rtx 3070 ($500) instead it's out next month. But the down side to this is that they will be sold out faster and since they are new won't be on a discount.

But let's revaluate your budget really quick. This is what you have so far:

*CPU - amd ryzen 5 3600x: $210
*GPU - (let's wait and see if we can lower down your budget a bit more)
*Motherboard - I'll get a different one at the same price the one emoticorpse sent you that one requires a bios update.
*Case - (get this instead of the other one) cooler master masterbox n600: $70
*Case fans - Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM (get 4-5 for now) there $14 a piece.
*CPU cooler - the stock one should be fine for now.
*RAM - Patriot Viper 4 Blackout (x2) 8GB 3200MHz: $43.
*Power supply - get one that's 80+ BRONZE 600W - 650W for $60-$80.
*NVME card - you can get one next year or scearch what it is and what it does on google to see if you really need it.
*Windows 10 64bit - $140
*Storage (what were you thinking of doing again) you were saying that you would get an ssd and put it inside of your old desktop, and take out the HDD and put it inside of your new desktop and that you have a 3TB one as well.

For the storage if the HDD has the operation system installed on it I'll just leave in in the old desktop instead. So you don't have to reinstall windows all over again. If you have a 3TB hdd already and can use it inside of the new desktop then I believe you have enough storage space for now. You can always get more storage, just make sure the pc is powered down for now.
what are the case fans for don't they come with the case?

The case fans are there so your hardware won't overheat. Cases will usually come with 1-2 fans pre-installed, but they won't be good enough for adequate cooling. For case fans you want something that will have high cfm (70 or higher). Cfm = airflow/higher rpm and cfm would make more noise. Either that you can go with water cooling, but that would be difficult for a beginner.

I'm sure some here will be outraged by the notion, but there is a happy medium between buying a turd PC from your local supermarket or assembling a proper one yourself.

Sites like mindfactory will sell all the parts you need and have options to get it all built for you. Just find your local equivalent. Check prices of parts you choose, to make sure you're getting your money's worth.
They won't beat bargains you find online so you end up paying something for the service (miles cheaper than the likes of Alienware) , but it's way better than stressing over it. Then when you upgrade parts in the future, do that yourself and you can learn bit by bit.

If you think you'd enjoy reading up and putting it all together -do it yourself, but if you're going to be frustrated by it, this could be an option for you.

Prebuilts could cost you $150-300 (some items were on discount because of labor day) more then building one yourself. Just plugged in my second build in on Cyber power pc. The only thing that was different was the motherboard and gpu.

Cyber power:
CPU: Amd ryzen 5 3600x
GPU: gtx 1660 super: $240
Total - $1,129

Mine:
CPU: Amd ryzen 5 3600x
GPU: gtx 1660 ti: $300
Total - $1,159

If you are going to get a prebuilt your best bet is to buy one on Cyber Monday, cyberpowerpc is a good site. But first you should do more research on custom built pcs, and see if you can do it yourself. Look up a YouTube video on how to assemble a motherboard and pc case.

Ok. What should I get for a motherboard?

Any cheap B550 is fine, like the B550M-DS3H.

You can check this one out:
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B550-GAMING-X-rev-10#kf

It's $130, but doesn't require a bios update with the amd ryzen 5 3600x.

B550M-DS3H is 95$, easily almost 30% cheaper. MicroATX cases are also often a little bit cheaper as well.

But you're getting:
1. Virtually the same VRM spec (GAMING X has a doubler on the vCore, and it's not like a 3600X is going to need 10 phases anyway, 5 is enough)
2. Almost identical rear I/O (GAMING X has a Gen2 Type A (red) port)
3. Same chipset
4. 3000-ready BIOS
5. Same on-board audio
6. Both have only 1 Gen4 M.2 slot (but the GAMING X has an additional Gen3 slot)
7. GAMING X only has one additional system fan header, and you can get fan hubs and splitters for much less than 35$
8. Both have Q-Flash Plus

So it's 35$ more for a USB 3 Gen2 Type A port, a Gen3 M.2 port, a doubler on the vCore (meaningless even for a 3800XT), and the "GAMING" branding.

True, the it's cheaper and the only difference is that the GIGABYTE B550 Gaming X has 3 fan headers well the other one has only two.

How many fans can you plug into the fan header. If it's three then you should go with it.

I mentioned the additional fan header.

You can get a fan hub for less than 10$ that'll let you connect several fans. It's not worth paying 35$ for basically the same motherboard feature set unless you're actually buying 2 M.2 SSDs.

Hell, you can get 10-port hubs from Deepcool for 15$ each. I've used them before, no problems with it.
ARCTIC sells a 10-port hub for 10$ but it's SATA powered.

True but it's better if you set up a custom fan curve, besides having the fans at top speed all the time. A fan hbb is $14 well a PWM split is $14 has well.

I've owned this exact hub, you can run a fan curve for all of the connected fans. Saves 20$ for a motherboard that will only connect 3 case fans without the hub.

So again, unless he wants 2 M.2 slots, there's no reason to buy the GAMING X. They will run the 3600/X/XT the exact same.

Ok, did know they sold fan hbb that cheap. All the ones that keep popping up for me were $20-70 for a fan controlled hbb.

Oof, that's way more than they should be... Were you looking for them at whole foods?
