As I said, for once the 'low end' x299 kit makes sense, as a total build it can work out cheaper than the mainstream kit, mind you the big i9's still cost a load right now, but the 6 core 12 thread 7800X is a crazy bargain.
When clocked equally they perform pretty much the same, and real cores perform better than hyper threading, 4 virtual cores add about 30% performance when hyperthreading is supported, in the same occasions hyperthreading is supported, there is a very high chance the extra cores can be utilized as they are treated the same pretty much.
tell that to ubisoft lol. Seriously though, I've seen a lot of performance tests in my time where HT has made a good difference whilst more cores does not.
A good recent example is Assasin's Creed Origins. The game performs identically whether you use a 4 core or 6 core cpu.
Hell we have games that don't even launch if you set your audio frequency above 48khz...
in Games like Assassin's creed origins / Wolfenstine 2, an i7 is solid 30% faster than same Gen i5 due to its HT. And also i7 8700k is much faster than i7 7700k due to 2 extra cores. Even Ryzen7 is beating 7700k, Which never happened before. see below-
Since both intel & AMD is now going 6+ Cores.
Game developers are now waking up.........

But seriously check out the discounts on entry x299 it's crazy good value compared to mainstream oddly.
You could even run 1440p/144.
My ego is feeling slighly less bruised lol.
I'm running a 1440p/144hz screen (sometimes my 4k envy) with 6600k and a 1080 strix without probs, so ya u are fine as eff.
only running it at stock though. hope that won't hurt me lol
I would overclock it, but i've had some games act weird just using the xmp profile on the ram...
note to self: stop buying japanese ports...
