i5 8400 vs i7 8700
I’m planning on upgrading my FX 8320, I want the absolute least amount of bottlenecking. I’m planning on playing games like ARMA 3, WWII, CSGO, Destiny 2, PUBG, 7 Days to Die. I would like to not have to upgrade my cpu for the longest time possible. I currently play on a 1080p 75hz monitor but I’m definitely planning to go to 1440p (maybe 144hz), or a ultrawide monitor. My current gpu is a r9 380. I’m planning to save for a Volta card that isn’t a Titan V (The 20 series cards). What cpu should I get?

i5-8600k

More powerful than both
Yes but I’m going to wait and buy a b360 board because I can use that money for something else, the mobo, and cooler added to the price of the i5 8600K would make it more expensive

That is true. I guess the 8700, but I hear the Intel coolers aren't strong enough to cool the locked i7's, so be careful.
I guess I can use some of the money I made for a cooler

hoenestly id spend the little bit extra and buy an entry level z370 board and an unlocked 8600k, it will last you alot longer as intel chips really have alot of headroom for overclocking and wont cost you much extra overall, buying budget boards you cant overclock on, and locked cpu's really is a false economy in the long run given how much faster overclocked chips are, and as such how much longer they remain viable.
Kek, none of the suggested, only 5820k :p2wheatley:

Id love to know why anyone would suggest such an old chip.

That's enough juice for the next x years.

What about storage?
I don't think that there are any games or video cards that will utilise a top-end 8xxx cpu fully - yet.
When volta comes out the situation might change.
But there will still need to be a "super game" to use the cpu fully.

For no overclocking, the i7-8700 would be my choice.
For overclocking, the i7-8700k.

Why not the i5-8600k?
As the core count increases the impact of multi-threading increases.
Intel mt adds 25-35% per core.
So a 6 core i7 is the equivalent of an 8 core i5.
That's a lot of ground to make up - if there is ever a game that will test these cpus.

Multi-threaded and single-threaded benchmark charts -

If cost is a factor then when the purchase is about to be made, add up the relevant costs. In Australia the price of coffeelake parts is dropping - almost 10% in 2 weeks.

The i5-8600k would only be my choice if money is tight. Even then an i7-7700k might be a better choice. And it is possible that new non-k 8xxx cpus will appear when the new mobos do.
I agree that the 8700k is faster and better, but more expensive, with the core count going up the impact f hyperthreading goes down a bit, I recommend the 8600k as the best middle ground, if the op can afford the extra get the i7, hell, if you really want to cover yourself with extra cores go threadripper or i9 lol.

The 7700k still costs more than the 8600k in most places, and doesn't perform as well, so that's a bad option to me, oddly, I've seen the 7740X as low as £220, whichever with the cost for x299 makes it better than the 7700k now and opens up a huge number of chips to upgrade to in the future, while hitting upto 5.4GHz.
WTF how could Intel still box awful CPU cooler? AMD stock coolers are better.

If you are on a tight budget the 8400 is a nice CPU though.
