Can a monitor be both IPS and TFT?
Right now, Lenovo has this monitor for $200 (with coupon code "monitor"[www3.lenovo.com] . It says the display type is ips and the monitor technology is tft. I thought they were two different types. Can someone explain this to me?

TFT is the overall type of LCD. Computer monitors, TVs, the full color LCDs you are used to seeing, are TFT-LCDs. A much more basic LCD, like a direct-driven LCD, would be the kind of LCD you might see in a calculator or basic digital watch/clock.

So you have TFT-LCD, then you have the type of panel. Examples are TN, VA, IPS, PLS, etc.

Thanks. I was thinking of TN and even googled it but somehow kept lumping the two together in my head as I read, but now it's clear that I wasn't paying enough attention.

What do you think of that monitor? I'm currently trying to decide between that one and this one [www.newegg.com]

My parents recently became disabled, so I will no longer be on the road regularly, but I have an Alienware 17 R4 with an Intel i-7 7700hq (2.8-3.8ghz) Nvidia gtx1070 16GB ram Win 10 250gb ssd 1tb hdd (7400rpm).

It will basically double as a tv for my room (though it won't be connected to anything but the computer). So it will be mainly used for gaming and multimedia, with some productivity.

If you are going to use it as a secondary in a bedroom and are going to put more then 3-6 feet distance between you and the screen then I'd probably look at something like:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0755KJ56W

If you want something suited for fast paced gaming and are sitting at a table/desk with the monitor quite close to you, then I'd look at something like:

I had actually looked at one of those before, but I decided I wanted to go for a 2560x1440 monitor since I have some decent horsepower and am a non-competitive raised on consoles gamer so I care much more about enhanced graphics than high fps.

I use a Toshiba 40L52000U1 TV set as my monitor. Not sure exactly what it's equivalents are, but you could easily get a decent 42" class Toshiba set that uses game mode on HDMI :-)
