Setting up Xbox One controller
Hi all. Brand new to Steam and haven't gamed on PC in over a decade. Got a new gaming PC and trying to connect Xbox one controller to Steam. I have the PC adapter and i was able to play Dark Souls 3 earlier using the controller. Now, Steam doesn't recognize the controller and says no controller is connected in settings. But on my Windows 10 PC, it says the controller is connected. I read to update firmware on the controller, but i don't have a cable to do so via the Xbox Accessories app. I am at a total loss because everything I read online, i am not able to complete all steps because of various reasons. Please help - i just want to play the dang game with a controller! PC games were so much easier back in the day lol.

Xbox One controller has nothing to do with Steam.

As long as Windows detects the controller the and the game your are playing supports the controller then it should not matter if steam recognises the controller or not.
Well, don't listen to them.
Steam Games will run through Steam Input. If Steam doesn't show a detected controller in the Controller Settings, your controller won't work in Games that run through the Steam Client.
Since you were able to play DS3, your controller was recognised at some point. The question is, what happened since then....

I do not own an XBox One Controller. So my tipps are merely speculative.

1) Restart Steam / your PC
2) Reconnect your controller while Steam is open/ closed
3) Open Steam as Adminstrator
4) Under Steam Settings you can subscribe yourself to the Steam Beta
5) Reinstall the drivers of the XBox Adapter

Please don't panic, we're here to help.
Sincerely, the man from the internet.

Thanks Banarama. I really don't know what is going on. Every time I play, it the controller doesn't work and I have to do all sorts of stuff that is always different everytime and then it works. One time it was as you said and I had to set up the controller in the Steam Client. Now this time, the controller is "connected" (as stated in my to my "Bluetooth and other devices settings" PC via the wireless adaptor. But the controller doesn't work. It doesn't work in Steam or any other app or even the PC itself. I suspect it is a driver issue but i can't update it in the Device Manager, the Xbox One Controller is not even displayed as if the control is non-existence. I know this should be a topic i move off of steam, but i have read so many Microsoft tech responses and they pretty much provide useless responses that don't help anyone.

Odd. I only had to install my Xbox One controller dongle along with some drivers that downloaded automatically for mine to work.
You're at the right place to ask. Don't worry.

1) Are you connecting your Xbox One controller via the official "Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10" or via a regular Bluetooth dongle? I.e. are you using the S Controller[beta.support.xbox.com]?
(I'm asking bc there exists an option that is called "xbox-controller via a wireless receiver" in the bluetooth menu.)

2) Where does the device appear in the device-manager? Check the Bluetooth entry and remove the entry related to the controller (deinstall). Try to reconnect your controller.

3) Check joy.cpl. Is there an entry in the "installed Gamecontroller" section when the controller is connected via bluetooth?

4) Update your Windows. Also check your Windows Update History for an update related to the controller.

5) Did the problem occur before you installed the Xbox Accessories app?

6) Every micro-usb cable that carries data can be used to connect your controller to the pc.

Hey Bananarama. I got it to work. Embarrassed to say, but for some reason the controller blue tooth was turned off. Even though I use the wireless PC adapter (which should work by itself to connect the controller), I for some reason also need to connect bluetooth for it to work (even though it says the controller is connected). Not sure why bluetooth got disconnected. Also, I find it works much better using Steam's Big Picture Mode. Now it works with no issues at all. Thanks so much for the help!

STEAM BIG PICTURE MODE is now forced to regular steam for all controllers. Now XBOX ONE WIRELESS controllers are detecting as xinputgamepad instead of its correct windows assigned driver which was once recognised by steam as windows xbox one controller, like when plugg ed in on the charge cord. Ever since steam has pushed big picture mode controller support its wrecked all my games loading times with the wireless gamepad forcing windows troubleshoot circle to appear whilst steam reassigns controller driving. Making my high end system with nvme drives take over 2min + extra ontop on regular loading times and now I cannot even use multiple controllers for two player games. STEAM PLEASE RECOMMEND A previous beta edition to roll back to prior to the release of your steam controller where big picture controller support is now forced in small steam mode. This issue has been plaguing my two systems for nearly a year now, not happy.
