MSI Z270 A Pro onboard audio issue

I have HD audio enabled & using a headset works. BUT when I plug a 3.5 cable in with the other end (RCA) to the receiver, I get no sound.
Any ideas?

Your on board "RCA" jack is actually digital coaxial cable...your headphones are analog stereo cables....Thet won't work together.

I have the 3.5 plug plugged into the audio jack of the board with the red and white RCA plugs plugged into the receiver. Not using any coax cable.

Did you hook this up to a Stereo Reciever?

After further review of your motherboard, it has ZERO digital audio outputs. What exactly are you using the RCA Stereo adapter for?

I'm trying to use onboard sound as I planned on plugging my bass into it's line in like a buddy of mine does. And yes, it's a Yamaha RX V663.

You're going to want to buy an audio card (internal or external) to handle surround sound. Line In is for recording stuff playing through your stereo. I own a Creative Soundblaster Omni and it works perfectly for 5.1 surround sound.

The Soundblaster Xfi isn't so bad.

Both cases, you will want to hook them up to the Yamaha RX V663 via Digital Coaxial cable or TOS/Link Cable...

So what you are saying is that it is impossible to connect the MSI Z270 A Pro to a Yamaha receiver?
Not looking for surround sound and never mentioned that.

I got the bass working using the mic in jack with the headphones in the headphone jack. That all works as it should.

I used to have a Auzentech X-Purity card eons ago and I used the exact same cable plugged into the exact same receiver. I used 3 cables. One for center speaker, one for fronts & one for rears.

If you are not looking for surround sound, you are using the wrong equipment to amplify the audio to your ears...The Yamaha RX V663 is a Stereo Surround Sound RECEIVER...It takes your audio signals, processes them, and puts them out to a set of speakers. Putting the Analog Red and White RCA audio cables into a 3.5mm headphone jack, and then putting that into LINE IN means you will be recording sound in stead of playing it back. Line In is the stereo version of the Microphone jack...

No no no. The bass was/is plugged into the line in. (mic jack) The cable from the receiver would obviously be in one of the line outs on the Z270. The board has a few different ones.

Think the confusion comes from me mentioning that headphones work. I meant they produce sound when plugged into their respective jacks whereas when plugged into one of the line outs, no sound is produced BUT the sound meter lights up to the music. So it "sees" the audio, just not coming out of the speakers. Sound meter under playback devices.
