It won't work like that, bub.
Remote activation is a process, an ongoing process. Every 180 days, it needs to verify with the host on the local network. You cannot simply "find a key" and expect to bypass the entire process. It was set up this way by design.
But by all means, let him try.
If it comes to it, just use the Trial until you can BUY a real key, if you reinstall dont enter a key when it asks, hit activate later or whatever it may say.

Tell us what version of Windows you are on, the build number n such. Open the RUN command by right clicking on the Windows startmenu icon and hit RUN then type in winver and hit enter
For all we know this could all be caused by a faulty RAM stick.
Very possible.
In my experience, even testing for ram issues is about futile. I've seen ram pass tests with flying colors, yet still be the prime cause for a number of issues.
OP, perhaps before reinstalling the OS, you can use your friend's ram to test? Assuming he has compatible ram with your system.
Test with something besides "Windows Memory Diagnostics"
MemTest86 is what I recommend to test ram, though like I said, even ram that can pass tests like these with flying colors... May still be cause for error.
Doesn't hurt to test, though.
No need to wipe anything. The install process will format the drive.
How are doing it? Step by step process.
That will "wipe" the previous OS
there really isn't any need to trash the system, especially if you have a card in there that can get those frame rates in game, the $720 computer would probably not be anywhere near as powerful.
couldn't see a list of specs for the computer that you have?
if your friend knew what they where doing, a fresh reinstall of windows, fresh download of drivers for the graphics card and all the motherboard components, this would probably be all that is needed.
if the PSU was dodgy or underpowered, it wouldn't cause the graphics card to overheat.
