DS4 + Windows 10 + Radeon Update = Controller Problems
I recently updated my Radeon software (20.4.2) and after restarting my computer, there was a problem with recognizing controllers. I use DS4Windows and a PS4 controller, connected by a USB cable. These worked perfectly fine before hand.

DS4 Windows and the Steam Controller setup recognizes the controller. Testing it in both DS4 and in the Steam Controller setup does work; the test does recognize the specific movements I do.

But when I play a game, it doesn't work!

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night doesn't work at all with a controller. I tried it on PCSX2 and also didn't work there. (And the controller test for PCSX2 also recognizes movements but nothing works in game) I did several steps to fix this; stopping and starting DS4, using the Hide Controller option, even reinstalling the program!

But when I closed DS4 and run Bloodstained, it works just fine! I heard that Steam prefers it's own controller setup, but being a computer noob I don't know what the problem is.

I would like to play Shadow Hearts again and not with trying to use mouse and keyboard. Please be detailed and simple, I'm a idiot and will get a headache trying to understand the complex and over-the-top steps to make a PC run.

check steams controller mappings for the games

steam -> library -> select game -> controller config
select each controller and map it as defaults

That...has nothing to do with my problem. The mapping isn't the problem. It's getting DS4 Windows to work with Steam or getting to work period. Do I have to quit Steam to get DS4 to work on non-Steam games? Or could I 'Add Game' and launch the PCSX2 emulator/game through Steam?

uninstall ds4windows, its not needed with the latest steam updates for steam games
add other games as non steam games for them to work with the controller

I did this and added PCSX2 to the Steam Games. And it still didn't work! Again, Steam recognizes the controller but it doesn't want to work within PCSX2.

Do I need to go looking around and put the iso file on Steam to get the controller to work? Or is PCSX2 just not working? (Please, I want to play Shadow Hearts; it's not available anywhere else outside of original release and it costs like a hundred bucks to afford a PS2)

If you want to use DS4Windows it needs the Hide Ds4Windows setting ticked and DS4Windows must be loaded before Steam is. If you load Steam first is screws it up as they fight for control. Often resulted in needing to remove the DS4 from devices and then pair it again.

Oh, alright, I'll download DS4Windows (again), quit out of Steam (Quick question, will closing the Steam Window count or do I need Task Manager?) and then do that.

Just Right click and select exit

EDIT: Check the Log tab before connecting controller it should say Using Exclusive Mode.....
If it says something in Red about it can't use exclusive mode for whatever reason close DS4Windows and reload it. When that doesn't work I just sign out of Windows and back in and it works fine.

Doesn't have the issue very often but often enough I know how to fix it

Steam ingame overlay needs to be running in order for the controller to work via Steam Input API. Start the emulator via steam (add a non-steam game) , run a game in the emulator, wait for the Steam Ingame Overlay notification to pop up ingame. The controller should now be functional. You should be able to configure the controller inside the emulator option's menu.

Works without DS4Windows.

It works! But only when I first unplug my controller and plug it back in. I also had to retoggle XInput first.

Welp, looks like I no longer need DS4Windows. All my problems have been resolved. Thank you for your yime.

The Radeon software updated both chipset and gpu drivers. It's possible that the newer chipset drivers is your issue, as this installs usb drivers.
