I want to switch to Linux. How good is Steam OS or Ubuntu?
Can I run high end Games on these? How stable are they. Do they slow my games down?

slow games down

you're basically emulating windows at that point. you'll have higher overheads and various glitches associated with that.

So does it slow high demand games so much it ruins them?

depends on the game. but the extra overhead is pretty big for the most part.

you basically need much more power from your hardware than you would if the game was running in windows basically. how much more varies depending on the game. imo its not worth the headache.

if the game has a linux build it will run just fine

for windows games it will need to emulate windows to run

Not really. For most games it's a matter of 10% less (at max) than Windows. Sometimes Manjaro has better 1% lows than Windows does.

Yet it all depends on the game and if you're willing to put in work to get some games to run. Since not all games play well with Proton without some extra work.

Don't use SteamOS, in it's current state it's a poorly maintained and outdated OS. It will do a poor job at running games and running on the latest hardware. If you want to do gaming take a look at Manjaro, Pop!_OS and Solus. I personally recommend Pop!_OS as a starter distro, it's the easiest to get up and running, especially on Nvidia hardware.

Most games work on Linux. And they generally run about the same as they do on Windows, but there are exceptions, some run a lot worse, others run a lot better.

Linux-based operating systems tend to be veryfast, stable and reliable.

WINE = Wine Is Not an Emulator.

It's a compatibility layer. It runs 'native'.

There is very little extra overhead, performance is usually about on-par with Windows, and often performance is much better.

A lot to consider here. POP looks good. I am looking at that as a way to go.

I'm really leaning towards pop os. The mainstream is not promoting it (and that is a good sign). When I look at user polls they favour it four to one over the other ones.

Mainstream Linux journalists and creators (If you can call them mainstream) are praising it constantly. LinusTechTips (Which I would very much consider mainstream) also mentions it regularly.

I am going to try it on old sparky pc, and if it turns out I will put it on my zappy pc. When I say mainstream I mean forbes and techradar, pcmag and their ilk. Thanks for the advice, It looks like you know of what you speak.
