Windows 7 Backwards Compatibility vs Windows 10
I'm building a PC right now from some of my old parts to play my old games that I still have on disc. Most of them are from the mid to late 90s as well as the early 2000s. I was just curious as to which OS I should go with because I've tried installing some of my old games on windows 10 and have been almost completely unsuccessful... It sometimes just tells me straight up, hey this isn't going to work on windows 10 64bit or it just won't launch. So I was curious if, considering it's closer to when those old programs were made, would windows 7 fair better with running them or am I going to end up running in to the sames issues? And before anyone mentions it, yes I know most old PC games from that era can be found on GOG or even here in Steam for a few bucks but I find it funner to try and find old games on disc and play them that way for the nostalgia of putting the disc in, going through the install GUI and all that.

If you don't care about security go with Windows 7. If you do then I'd dual boot. Run 7 when you want to play the games and 10 when you don't. Or even just have the seven one running off a external usb drive. If they're old small games, performance over usb shouldn't be an issue.
I remember switching from XP to 7 back in the day and never looking back. You should be fine with 7.

Well I have my main system which runs windows 10 so I'd just be using the Win 7 machine for retro games on disc

I was considering XP but I was reading that it's a bit of a hassle getting XP on a sata drive and I'm not even sure my parts would be compatible. It's a AMD FX 8350 and GTX 650 ti.

I would think XP could run perfectly on a 8350. Probably want to go 64 bit but I would think it could be done. Matter of fact I actually have my m5a99fx and 8350 sitting on my entertainment center right now. I might end up putting it inside a case and seeing if I could put Xp on there sometime this week. Matter of fact I just looked it up and that motherboard has a bunch of xp drivers by ASUS. Try looking your stuff up.

Looks like XP can't easily be installed on an SSD which is what I have...

Parts that old would only have support up to WinXP.
