Is it alright to assume that any quad core CPU is decent to play games on PC?
Say examples like an Intel I5 3570K or an I7 4790K

Yeah, they're fine for gaming but are on a decline. More games are benefiting from additional cores and having additional cores minimises stuttering.

3770k or 4790K with a good board depending on which is available would be a better choice
4 Core 4 Thread CPUs are losing their shine.

no
intel k can be oc'd and good enough for recent games
but the aii/pii x4 are very poor even tho they have 4 real cores and can be clocked over 3ghz
even the first gen i series quads (i5 750 2.6ghz) easily beats those
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-750-vs-AMD-Athlon-II-X4-645/2773vsm2408

but the newer i3 9100 (4 cores 3.6ghz) is about twice as fast

as for comparing to the 3rd to 5th gen i5k overclocked, are close to the locked i3 9100

On my circa 2013 PC it has an Intel i5 4670K with 16GB DDR3 and a rx570 4GB, runs all games on max or ultra at 1080p 60 fps or above, maybe a few gfx tweaks such as particles or post fx lowered to high or medium. Runs BF1 and BF5 on 64 player servers with most settings at ultra except for as above some tweaked, it gets lows of 50fps and avg of about 85fps.

I wouldn't go below a i5 4690K though if I am to be fair

No.

Quad core quad thread (i5) are more or less dead for modern gaming (2020 titles).

You can still get by on a quad core eight thread chip like an i7 though...

The real answer might depend on why you ask. Planning to buy one or just curious?

The current i3's run rings around old i7's. They are quad core 8 threads now. I wouldn't buy an old quad core.

Most games will run still run fine on old i7 quad cores. i5's could be pushing things. Depends on the game. It's more the gpu nowadays that is the performance limiter.

Really? Can you prove that? Death Stranding works pretty well on i3-9350k/Ryzen 2200g. But, ofc, worse than on 4c/8t.

Sounds like someone only looking at averages and ingnoring the frame time graphs for the 4c/4t tests...

No proof? As expected...

Nah, your just impatient af and too lazy to look things up yourself... as expected...

Wanted to get on a PC to look it up...

If you think that trash of a 4t frame time graph is acceptable then thats ur problem, not mine.

I got 60+ FPS min (!!!) on 4c/4t ultra settings. 4c/8t allows to get 20% more. But even first is perfectly playable without any stutter. So, you claim about alleged death of 4c/4t CPUs is wrong.

I currently have a PC running an I7 7700 and one more running an i5 3570, just concerned whether i can just keep upgrading gpus in the future instead of going through the hassle of changing the cpu and the motherboard.

My target FPS is actually 60, i dont ask for a lot of frames because I play with controller.

Forgive me for trusting a know reviewer who was one of the first to run core scaling tests in the game publicly and share the data, data now backed by others, and data that is consistent on both an Intel 10th gen chip and AMD 3000 chip over your non-proven claims.

You asked for proof and have been proven wrong, and now you claim you are right anyway...

As expected....

Vadim, you are about one step removed from a troll, and likely live in a cave with them. You fanboi left and right for Intel, claim to code and dev, claim Intel is *soo* much better because of your supposed niche cases that few would compare with...

And now you are in here claiming 4C/4T is still good in 2020...

Time to put up or shut up, cuz the only one needing to backup or prove their claims at this point is you...

If your target is 60 and you are OK with ocasional stutter and frme time issues, a 4c/8T chip will still do you wonders.

I would seek out a 2600/2700/3770, or their K versions, and swap that out for the slower i5. If you are on a locked board dont bother with the K, if you have a Z series go for it.

Plan to sell the i5, and dont spend more than 150 out of pocket (counting the re-coup from the i5) else you are just about better off building new on a 3100x.

Do you nedd another example? Here it is: https://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/software/control_pc_performance_review_optimisation_guide/8
Game "Control". 2020.
