Steam input will make sure the controller works properly on all games even those who only support Xbox or generic controllers.

Use a Micro USB charge cable. Connect it to your computer and the other to the DS4. If you want to charge and use wired you'll need a Play and Charge or Power and Data Sync cable. Both are the same just labelled different.
Some phone cables work if they a micro USB. If you have a phone with a different connection you can get Mini USB to Micro USB, USB-C to Micro USB adapters so you can still use the same cable.
You'll need a Bluetooth adapter to communicated with it. I used an ASUS USB-BT400 Bluetooth USB Adapter for years without issues.
You can still use DS4 wired if you don't have Bluetooth onboard your motherboard or an adapter
catherine ignores steam and shows proper prompts based on which type controller you have i believe.
there are about 3 different versions of the sony ds4 controller, each has a slightly different teardown
check ifixit site for instructions if you have another 1s lipo/liion to try in it
That's down the the games. Most games don't have Playstation style prompts no matter what. Best option when using DS4 is to just get used to it. Really doesn't take that long to get used to it either.
If you play on XBOX or other controllers
X and Square are always the West button
Y and Triangle are always the North button
A and Cross are always the South button
B and Circle are always the East button
So using if someone owns a PS and gamed on an XYAB controller aswell they should get used to the difference in prompts. The worse to get used to is the X and cross as the symbol looks almost identical.
Not really. Especially if you own and still use a Playstation as you'd see both sets of prompts on different platforms anyway.
If you prefer DS4 controller for it's shape and layout and would prefer XYAB labelled buttons you could try a Logitech F710. Similar though it was a little to chunky for my liking.
I've know a few people make things easier for them by putting stickers with A,B,X and Y on the DS4 buttons and another use paint to put A,B,X and Y over the buttons and print it out. Then left the printout somewhere they good see if they needed to glance at it. Another just used a postit note and stuck in on their monitor.
Personally I Photo shopped a DS3 image and would have that loaded on my second display for an hour or so. Was pretty used to seeing XYAB by then. Still had a few slip ups with the X and cross occasionally but was fine after a day or 2. Rather that than an uncomfortable XBOX or F710 controller.
