Adélie Linux on PPC no login
Since my attempts at installing OS 9.0.4-9.2.2 failed on my iMac G3, I’ve decided to install Linux instead, specifically Adélie Linux. I’ve burned myself a CD of it and put it into my iMac (and yes it is the PPC version of Adélie) it boots fine and gets to a point where it says “reboot in 120 seconds” then when it does reboot, it goes through the exact same process instead of giving me a login screen. Also there are no errors at all when booting so it’s definitely compatable with this PC, it gets stuck in a boot loop of restarting and rebooting which I find odd. Any suggestions?

Are you sure the “reboot in 120 seconds” message is something related to the Linux distro and not the MAC? I see no reason for a Linux distro to give such a message and force a reboot, especially on first boot of the OS.

I am not familiar with the distro, however Adélie Linux appears to be quite a new distro it only earlier this year had it's 1.0-rc1 release. So it might not be the most stable or bug-free distro available.

I think there may be some form of low level encryption as I am unable to reinstall any OS even if I zero the HDD

Edit: I’ve found the issue, I need to download specifically the beta 4 version of Adélie Linux

Final edit: Linux failed to install, the hard drive is most likely encrypted on a really low level, I will replace the drive and try again.

Also when an OS installer goes to reboot, before it actually reboots, remove the optical or usb install media.

You could try another distro such as Fedora and see if that goes any better.

Tried fedora on the original hdd and the new one, no luck, just in case you’re wondering I’ve tried installing everything from OS 8.5, 9.1, 9.2.2, 10, to SUSE Linux 5.2, to Adélie Linux to yellow dog Linux and lastly fedora. And I also tried putting a DVD drive in it to try xenial pup and it wouldn’t even read anything off of the DVD drive. I might just use this thing as an external monitor.
