Laptop GPU stuck at 400MHz
Whenever I launch a video game, the loading screen and menu have low GPU usage and high clock speeds, then when I'm in the game GPU runs at 400MHz at 99% usage.

I can't play any video games because they are really laggy, all power saving settings are turned off, unless I missed one. nVidia Control Panel is set to Maximum Performance.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

ASUS ROG SCAR laptop

GTX 1070

Strangest part is that GPU runs fine in the menus but in game it runs at 400MHz.

oh sweet laptop <3

i dont have an ASUS but i know when my gfx wont go higher then 300MHZ.

for me its not a setting in Windows but in the Command Center app. It happens when i have a profile selected in which my laptop treats i am in a powersaving battery mode.

Try to find a high performance setting in your control app?

oh i have the odd feeling that is not your 1070 doing all the work in the menu, but your integrated intel GPU.

When your game needs the power your 1070 doesnt deliver since its in battery energy saving mode

(i think)

Strange, because I fixed it by changing "Prefer Maximum Performance" to "Adaptive" in Nvidia control panel, for some reason in the Witcher 3 it is now at 800MHz instead of 400, should be running at 1400. I don't know at this point, I unchecked all the power saving settings.

Also, which command center app?

i dont have an ASUS sorry.

But in NVIDIA control panel i cant set it, also not in Windows. Its the control panel from my laptop (alenware). I guess ASUS has its own version

yes it should be running at 1400! When i alt-tab out of the game to see it drops almost instant but i can see values at 1400

Laptop = wipe out all drivers via DDU. Once you wipe all brands you will have wiped out all Chipset, GPU amd Audio drivers. Then click the option in DDU to Disable Windows Auto Driver Install Feature. After you wipe out each brand, reboot the system. Then download and install latest official driver for each device... motherboard chipset, both gpus, audio, lan, wifi, bt, touch-pad; etc.

Get all the drivers from each chipset makers website; Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, Realtek, etc.

Get the TouchPad driver+software from the support site of the laptop maker for your model of laptop.

Once a driver is ran and installed, reboot. Do this for each driver until all are install and system rebooted.

If using Intel + Nvidia then you must go into NVIDIA Control Panel afterwards and set the High Performance nvidia gpu as the default. This will ensure that is used when launching apps such as games.

Also have the Laptop plugged in if you wish to play games at full performance. Full performance is not allowed when using Battery only.

Set OS power profile to High Performance

To monitor gpus properly with light weight app, use GPUZ. If you have more then one gpu, select it via the drop down box at the bottom of the GPUZ window. Then click the Sensors tab. You can also choose to install the app instead of just running it, which will allow features such as "Start with Windows"

i uninstalled and reinstalled all the laptop drivers, OS Power Profile is set to "Ultimate Performance", laptop is plugged in, there is no such thing as "High Performance nvidia gpu" in control panel, but its set to maximum performance.

My GPU still fluctuates between 800-1000MHz. What else?

Ok so what's the problem?
It's working as intended, it's not stuck.

No its not working as intended. I saw my GPU hit 1800MHZ last night

what GPU do you have? my laptop has a gtx 1070 and it should go up to 1683MHz, but instead just going between 800-1000MHz

rtx 2060. Which should be same as yours in performance. My laptop is Alienware m17.

there isnt any setting in NVidia Control Panel. In Windows Power Options the obvious settings. For me its all in Alienwares Command Center.

May i add you so i can show you the screenshots? in case you want to compare settings

Actually i am not running in fully performance mode because it kicks in turbo boost and my CPU goes 4GHZ making it too damn hot to have on my lap XD.

Install GPUZ.

Run it, select the NVIDIA GPU at bottom.

Click Sensors tab at top.

Now run a benchmark so we can see what everything is hitting for a max after about 1 minutes time.

Try a stress test such as MSI Kombuster > try a VRAM TEST or FURMARK TEST. Do not use FULL SCREEN, but select the same res as the Laptops native screen resolution. As you'll be able to view GPUZ at the same time in real-time but alt+tabbing over to that while the stress test is running.

Are you folks brand new to PCs?
On Laptops such as yours and the OP, you have a dual gpu system, Intel + Nvidia. You need to make the NVIDIA the default gpu in Nvidia Control panel, manage 3d settings, Global
