For a GTX 1080, is 80C safe, or close to overheat?

A few C higher and the card will start throttling.

It's hot for a 1080 but nothing to really worry about.

80C is Technically fine
a little warm for my liking, but fine

As long as you stay under 90C

More or less yes.
It has the same safeguards as a cpu and will lower the clock to prevent damage (short version), so dont worry.

You can help your gpu/system a bit with a good airflow (depends on your current setup).

What type of fan curve do you have going on?

its safe, if it gets over 95 then you should look into it

i dont like the fact that the fans dont kick in till 70c.i use msi afterburner and run the fans at a constant speed of 60 -70% card runs much cooler 30c idle and around 60c under full load.IMO its easier on the fans.done it with a 760,780,980ti and now a 1080ti never had an issue.

Its normal for them to not kick in till 60C or so, all modern GPUs have that feature to reduce fan noise and increase the life of the fan.

And it helps the fans to be cleaner in smoke/dust prone areas

If you need your GPU to run cooler at idle then you probably have something using the GPU that keeps its clocks raised, using Performance mode will cause that to happen, switching to Optimal power should fix that.

did a custom fan curve, 10C cooler, but louder

Well thats what happens when you raise the fan speed lol

But 70C is better than 80

Buying a bunch of case fans might be a better overall solution, assuming you've got an ok case and u did a proper cable management.

+1

More cool air coming in the better cooling the GPU fans will do. If your case has a side panel with the option for a fan add a new fan as an intake. That'll push air directly onto the GPU and improve cooling. Then you could adjust GPU fan curve again to reduce noise to a point your happy with temps and noise.
