New Custom Build Computer - Running Slow, Low FPS
Hello everyone,

Recently I custom built a new computer (Parts from Canadian site NCIX & Amazon) and it's not meeting the expectations I had on it.

These are my specifications:

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/LotusKitten/saved/nXD2RB

CPU:
Intel Core i7-7700
Motherboard:
ASUS Prime B250M-A
RAM:
G.Skill Ripjaws 16GB (2X8GB)
Video:
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB SSC
Power Supply:
EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze

The first game I downloaded and played was League of Legends. I was getting between 60-80 FPS. This worried me because my sister has a GTX 960 and she gets over 400 FPS for League. I moved LOL onto my SSD to try and see if there was an improvement but nothing changed.

My boyfriend suggested playing different games and seeing if maybe I would get better frames and I downloaded Fortnite, Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Minecraft to test the theory.
Unfortunately, I can't run either Fortnite or Divinity on Ultra (Like I had thought I was able to with the graphics card), and the highest it seems to go without lag is Med-High quality for Divinity and High quality for Fortnite. Even in Med-High quality for Divinity, I get jitters and freezes temporarily sometimes with what seems like max 80 FPS.

For minecraft, I will get highest 70 FPS for high-ultra quality, and I usually fiddle around with the video to get high performance at the sacrifice of better looking games... and sadly I'm the type of person that prefers to play all her games on Ultra with beautiful graphics and even better performance (Hence why I bought a new custom PC after using a toaster forever).

Sometimes, if I minimize my web browser and maximize it again, the entire window is black until I move it around and the browser pops back up with what I was looking at.

I updated all the drivers and made sure to always check if there's any new updates or drivers to install. I've set my computer so it is in Performance Mode and I've done (what I think is) everything to enhance performance to get better frames, but nothing seems to be working.
Granted, 60 FPS is all anyone really needs for a game but I would think that with the build like mine I would achieve higher performance than just 60 FPS.

It could be the fact that I put it together without professional help and I'm either missing something or didn't plug something in properly, but I'm unsure what to do at this point.

TL;DR - I bought a custom made computer with what I thought were high specifications and can only reach up to 80-100 FPS on Med-High quality depending on the game, and sometimes not even that much. Sometimes it freezes and jitters when I'm just browsing the internet. My sister has a computer she built 2 years ago with lower specs than mine and somehow exceeds all of her expectations reaching up to 400 FPS on just League of Legends with a GTX 960. Her computer can virtually run any game she wants whereas mine struggles with minecraft on occasion only reaching up to 60 FPS on High-Ultra quality. Sometimes, it's not even the games and the overall PC speed itself.

Why the low-end budget psu :steamfacepalm:

And 60hz with that setup.. dunno.

Anyway, make sure every driver is installed and/or up2date.
Possible bios too.

Any background app or crap running? Check the task manager.

The PSU is fine.

Make sure you have the monitor connected to the GPU and not in to the motherboard.

Because I got someone to help me build the computer from NCIX and they were not the greatest of help.
(Gave me a 1060 3GB instead of the 6GB I asked for and switched all the parts that said was "in stock" but turned out it wasn't... Then I go to switch my graphics card from the 3GB to the 6GB after their mistake and turned out it wasn't in stock even though they said it was :steamfacepalm:............)

Yeah, those specs should definitely be pushing more. I can run divinity os2 on ultra without a problem on lower end cards. Have you tried reseatting it? Remember not to force it in.

Worst case scenario I'd recommend rma'ing the card.

The power supply is fine, you might want to switch the gpu out for another model, the 3gb will hold you back in some areas, especially if you try to run any enb's in a modded skyrim for ex.

I personally have never run a 1060 though. Omega would have a better opinion on it.

I got that response from another forum, I think this may be the problem and I'm going to check it out today when I'm off work...

I don't like a clutter on my desktop or computer when I'm trying to run my games so the most I'll have up is spotify or a web browser to look up stuff. I would assume that with a set up like mine a couple small applications won't drop the frames to the extent of lagging, especially with a game like Minecraft.
I have a program that automatically detects and installs any new drivers for the parts I have.

Divinity original sin 2 ultra can be very CPU demanding when there are lots of smoke, my fps drops from 150+ on 1440p to around 80-90 with all those exploding bulbs.

I expect to see FPS drop if I'm running on Ultra and there's lots of ♥♥♥♥ going on on my screen, but I wouldn't think that I would be getting a base of 60-70 FPS and dropping to even lower than that.
I thought I had a pretty high CPU too since I wanted the computer to stream as well, hence why I bought the i7-7700.

One issue I see is your CPU isn't that fast. You bought the non k locked version, as opposed to the unlocked which can hit 5GHz as opposed to the 3.6 of yours, your motherboard also stops any overclocking if you were to swap it. The 7700k is the crazy powerful CPU, not the 7700, frankly, I'd go slap the employee who advised you to save a few bucks and go for the non k and b250 over the k and a z270. With the CPU, I'd say you are getting similar to what I would expect.

Should I get a new motherboard and CPU? Or just a new CPU? Is there anything I can do beforehand to try and speed up the computer before I start making the cash rain?

The non k boost to 4.0 GHz, there's nothing wrong with it if you want to save money and don't need the extra GHz and the faster RAM speed. Manually update graphics driver.

What I was hoping to do is stream games and play games at a higher FPS than what I'm getting now... as long as the CPU I have doesn't effect these things now, I'm not too worried about it.

The 7700 non- will do a fine job... don't worry.

Back to topic and your fps prob..

What programm btw?

But check the nvidia driver if it's a beta or whql.

I think it has to do with your RAM. Non K and B250 mobo can not support 2666Mhz DDR4. Either some automatic setting is wrong or something is causing your trouble.
1. check if gpu is powered by 6pin from psu and monitor video cable connected to nvidia gpu.
2. reinstall all steam pre-requisite (directx 9.0c, visual c++ 2008)
3. clean install latest stable nvidia driver and reboot pc.

I have the nvidia experience program and I also have Driver Booster (Free version lol) that detected a whole bunch of out of date drivers when I first downloaded it, and after downloading all of the new drivers, there wasn't much of a change.
