GPU Causing BSoD?
Hey,
I've been dealing with BSoD's for the last 3 months and I'm runing out of ideas.
Basically what would happen was I launched a game and the PC would almost immediately crash or freeze (lock up).
The BSoD's started as System service exception then apc index mismatch, some kernel error and so on.
At first I thought that a recent video driver update might have been the cause. So I updated the driver once more to the latest version. At first it seemed to increase time before crashing by a little, but it soon started crashing immediately after launching a game again.

And so I've cleaned my PC of dust, replaced my HDD with an SSD and added 1 case fan and at first it seemed like it helped since I wen't full 131 minutes of gaming before a crash.

One weird thing I noticed is that the fans usually go quiet when in-match and kick in when the loading screen or main menu appears. So could it be a fan configuration issue? Maybe the GPU isn't getting cooled the way it's supposed to.

I tried confirming my theory by installing MSI Afterburner but I can't seems to get the In-game overlay to work; something about the application not being compatible with my OS (Windows 10).

The only things I have in mind to try is, adding more case fans to improve air flow, and setting the fans at 100% all time in Afterburner to see if that helps cooling.

OS: Windows 10, 64-bit
CPU: AMD A8 6600k @ 3.9GHz, Quad-Core
RAM: 8GB DDR3
GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 4GB OC-Edition, G1 Gaming (Current driver : 384.94, can update to 385.41)
PSU: 560W
Disk: 240GB SSD
MOBO: Some Gigabyte basic Mobo. - Don't know the full name.

The issue has to do with a poorly written driver making too many asynchronous procedure calls, or bad System Files.

You have a couple of options for the latter regarding this if this is happening in Windows 10. Either you run the “SFC /scannow” command without quotes while running Command Prompt as Administrator. That scans verifies and repairs/replaces the bad or missing system files. This may take upward of a half hour to 45 minutes.

Or, you go download Microsoft’s 1903 Media Creation Kit and do an in-place update to Windows where it downloads and installs all the updates and keeps your personal apps and files. That simply replaces all the system files. This can take 1 hour or more and honestly I’d recommend finding something else to do while this is happening.
I've just reinstalled windows 10 completely cleaning the drive. Disabling the Nvidia card the issue doesn't occur. Edit: Occurred without it too but took about 7 hours.
Aye so it’s a driver issue. Roll back to the previous driver version for your GPU. Disable Windows 10’s ability to automatically download and install device drivers in the background.

Don't rollback. Use DDU to wipe drivers in safe mode, then reinstall the latest stable driver from Nvidia/AMD directly.

The current “stable” driver is causing the issue. Rolling back to the previous driver version is a better option than reinstalling the bad one using DDU.

I never said reinstall the old one. I said install the latest known stable driver. Usually 431.xx

They were already using the latest “stable” version.

They did not say anything about their drivers.

The issue in general is the latest drivers available to them. You said not to roll back but to use DDU to use a previous driver version, which is essentially the same thing. DDU will update to the latest WQHL drivers from NVIDIA...those drivers are on 441.08.

Driver version 436.48 was the last driver version before 44x.xx drivers were released. So simply installing 436.48 without DDU should suffice.

I said only to wipe the drivers with DDU. Then to install manually via Nvidia's website. You misunderstood me.

I think I've already tried everything. Roll back to 39x.xx, reinstalled windows 10 cleaning everything (basically returned to factory settings, which means that some drivers came installed, like Nvidia v353 and others updated automaticly via windows), but nothing worked. Yesterday even without the Nvidia driver installed occurred (took longer time).

You need to update ALL drivers from here:

https://www.asus.com/ca-en/ROG-Republic-Of-Gamers/ROG-GL552VW/HelpDesk_Download/

Then, for GPU drivers you must use DDU in safe mode, then install the 431.xx drivers from Nvidia's website directly.

Yes, everything was downloaded exactly from this asus link. I updated intel drivers through the intel assistant tool as they are not updated on this page (drivers from 2016).

For the GPU I'll try to use this DDU mode you said.

You don’t need DDU unless you’re low on hard disk space. Windows will use whichever driver version you installed and won’t automatically roll back to the newer driver.

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/152009/en-us

Before you install, uninstall Geforce Experience. It’s not needed. It is bloatware at best.

When you install, do a clean installation so it clears whatever settings you changed (which may also be causing the problem), and opt out of using Geforce Experience.

Which is why I said specifically for GPU drivers to manually install them from Nvidia.
