What purpose does a full sized mouse pad have?

You know those mouse pads that go under your keyboard as well? Whats its purpose or is it some kind of fad?

Good stable position for the keyboard and mouse; it looks nicer overall and provides more than enough room for mouse. Instead of buying a smaller pad and confining yourself to it. Why not.

Makes it easy to shift the keyboard around for more or less mousing space, nice even surface.
"Razer Goliathus 900*300*3MM" knockoffs on ebay work nice for ~10 dollars shipped.
Its pretty much indistinguishable from a "real" one.

Claims to be speed but is control, which I prefer, its got a more microfiber like texture. Tests show the speed is actually no different.

Since we switched to the "simple optical" mice, mousepads are not needed at all except for some special surfaces that can confuse the optics.

Therefore the pads are there only for "convenience" value. A full-size one may feel more comfortable and ensure moving along with the beyboard (more importantly staying put).

For me the most important feature of a mousepad is the wrist-hold.

I have a mousepad to keep my table from scratching up the rubbers under my mouse.

I have one of those extended pads which I use with my Nerdytech Counchmaster... It's kind of essential as the keyboard holds the pad in place so it doesn't move about or slip off the Couchmaster.

You can still wear through your desk finish, I used to just refinish mine, but its become too much trouble.

I got one of the generic XXXL pads[www.amazon.com] along with a separate mouse wrist pad[www.amazon.com] and I do much prefer the easy cleanup using a hand-size cut of packing tape to pick up all the dust off the pad and mouse.

Prior to that, it was directly on the wood surface that I had to clean with a mild surface cleanser like windex then re-treat the desk with some wood polish. I do miss the super-smooth action of the mouse on a freshly-polished surface but I feel it does track a bit better on the pad. Also keeps the action consistent where as the polish wore off it changed slowly over time, had to re-treat to get back the super-slickness. A quick swipe of tape is much less maintenance IMHO and performance is almost as good as the polish.

Might want to fix your XXXL pad link, it's the same as the Wrist Pad one.

The mouse pad that goes under the keyboard is designed as a wrist rest (if the keyboard doesn't have a wrist rest builtin). The height and comfort remains in uniformity across both hands (resting on the mouse and the keyboard).
