Why is my PSU sooo loud?
I built my PC in october last year and the specs are as follows:

GPU:MSI GTX 980ti
CPU:Intel i5 6600 (with stock heatsink)
MOBO: MSI B150M Mortar
RAM: Kingston HyperX fury black 16gb
SSD: Crucial MX300 275GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1tb 3.5"7200RPM
CASE: Deepcool tesseract
PSU: XFX 650W (80 plus bronze)

From then up untill now my PC has been fine but its always been loud when i start playing a game. at first i thought it was my gpu being super loud but its known for being quite a quiet gpu and i used msi afterburner to turn off the fans while in a game for 2 seconds and it made no difference to the noise.

I now know that the source off the loud WRRRRRRRRRRRRing noise is my power supply. apparently your not supposed to hear them above everything else? when im not in a game its much quieter but the fan on it is still spinning is that normal?

Now that the weather is getting hotter i noticed my PC is getting louder. I can hear it the other side of the house with my bedroom door closed and its highy distracting when playing a game, even if i do wear headphones. Also is 650W enough for a PC like mine? I dont want to risk frying my other commonents.

any replies would be greatly appreciated :) thanks in advance :D

650W is fine, and you won't fry anything if it's not.

Are you sure it's your PSU, and not some other fan? Intel stock coolers do get really noisy, and 980 Tis are neat, but can be noisy if too hot as well.
Also wondering if your components clock down as they should on idle - check fan rpm.

When was the last time you cleaned your system? PSU could be full of dust which traps heat on components making them hotter which will increase the fans RPMs. Plus the c*** on the fan blades will decrease its effectiveness.

Try cleaning with some compressed air to see if that helps. Can be easier to remove the outer shell depending on the brand/model. Make sure it's turned of at the socket and the PSU, if it has it's own switch.

For reference it's easier to identify a whirring/noisy ran if you remove the side panel of your case and listen to each fan without it impeding you identification efforts.

Its generally either high load or high heat that makes the PSU run loud.
Or the fan bearing is failing; you can generally replace PSU fan with a Case Fan of properly layout/holes/size.

I think it is the psu as i put my ear to it with the side of the case off and it seems like thats where the annoying wrrrring was comming from. i havnt cleaned it in a few months so i will try that and give you an update

If its just the PSU fan you can do what BMGmaming suggested and replace the fan rather than the whole PSU.

Yea sounds like the fan bearing is toast. Can just replace the fan, which PSU model is it exactly?

Not XFX 650W; the actual model# listed on it. Or link the item online please.

If you ever RMA the PSU though, please put original fan back inside before shipping it.
Avoid scratching/damaging anything, in case warranty RMA is ever needed.

I have cleaned the PC with compressed air and doesnt seem to have made any difference. The exact psu is this: https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/650-Watt-XFX-Pro-Core-Edition-Non-Modular-80--Bronze_681498.html
its the TS edition but im not sure if that makes any difference

i dont really want to take it appart as i might break something. would a warranty cover this if it is the bearing?

EDIT: its this one:

Yes a worn fan would be covered under warranty and if you don't understand much about electricity I'd suggest you stay out of your PSU, lastly if you do take it apart don't screw up the stickers on the seams if they're damaged it'll void your warranty.

PSUs ramp the fan up two ways one by load and the other by temp.

Ps, the 980ti is a 250w card so as summer rolls around it'll heat up the case more with a higher ambient and if your psu ramps up by heat there ya go.

Yea just RMA it and wait. Thats the safe way. Most have stickers u'd have to break to open up the PSU anyways.

As far as killing yourself, well learn how to safely discharge the PSU; very simple to do that. And dont touch the internals or drop screws inside.
