Keep in mind you'll also need DDR4 RAM.
If you want to upgrade on the motherboard you have then an i5 4xxx or i7 4xxx or possibly the Xeon E3 1231-v3 I think it's called would be for you. Those would give you four cores or four cores and hyper-threading.
The i3 7100 is a dual-core hyper-threaded processor just like the one you already have, a bit newer and somewhat faster but not all that different from what you already have.
You can however use processors such as the i5 4460, i5 4590, i5 4690, i5 4690K, i7 4790, i7 4790K and such. But by now you'd likely buy those used and that should also be cheaper. Depending on what motherboard you have (CPU-Z can find out) you may be able to use the i5 5675C and i7 5775C but those haven't been sold in high volume so you'll likely not see them around anyway.
But if it's any help just know that there's not all that much difference between the i3 4160 and i3 7100 anyway so .. if that bring some support :). I would much rather have an i3 than my AMD Phenom X4 9850 ;D
