Steam doesn´t recognise any controllers
Hi, I am using my new laptop with windows 10 and I am trying to play games either with my xbox 360 controller or with my nvidia shield controller. I connect them via USB to my laptop, windows recognise them and says they are working well but when I open steam and go to settings/ general controller settings says: no controller detected. I open metal slug, go to settings and it doesnt recognise any controller. What else should I do??

Turn on the 360 controller, press and hold the connect button on the USB receiver, when that starts blinking, hurry and press the connect button on the controller.

Once connected, the actual controller should show and be able to test all sticks/triggers/buttons via JOY.CPL; if not then the Controller wont be seen by anything at all.

Connect only one controller at any given time when they are different.
Then load up Steam Client > Big Picture Mode. Disable all the Controller boxes, except for Generic, then exit and restart Steam.

Check that a Controller is actually working properly via
Winkey+R
JOY.CPL

Thanks but still not working. When I do that check, no installed game controllers appear. But when i go to control panel/hardware and sound/devices and printers there appears my nvidia controller (depicted as a mousse in the graphic) and in "device status" it says that it is working properly. But if I click on the device with the right mousse button and check game controller settings, no controller appears.

Just get rid of the NVIDIA Controller from this test. Connect and test the 360 Controller.

When you plugged it in the first time did WIndows detect it and install drivers for it.

Ok I am only with my xbox 360 controller connected via USB to my laptop. Steam doesn't recognise it either. And if I go to joy.cpl no game controller appears. If I go to the control panel/Devices and printers.. there appears as an unspecified device called xbox360 wireless controller and in properties says its working properly.

So it sounds like the drivers are installed. Did you push the button down in the middle of the controller to turn it on when running joy.cpl.. Sorry I have to ask

I am not using any usb receiver. I am using a usb cable that can charge the battery and it has not any buttons just a led indicating charge information. Maybe the problem is this cable? Maybe it is just for charging purposes? Ok, I have looked in the net and i would need to buy a receiver for my wireless controller. I didn´t remember that this cable came with a lithium battery that I bought for my controller and it is only for charging purposes. Thanks a lot guys you have been of great help!

One last question, What should I do? Buy a receiver for my xbox360 controller or try to use the Nvidia shield controller?

360 Controller you must buy and use Microsoft USB 360 Wireless Receiver. There is no other way to use 360 Controller on PC if it is Wireless. USB Cable can not work for 360 wireless controllers. That is for Charging Only and works on Xbox360 Console because on the console, it already has a wireless receiver built in and then allows for "Play & Charge"

Ok so lets try the NVIDIA Controller, this does work, but once connected you need to install the controller driver via one of the NVIDIA GTX GeForce GPU Driver suites/packages; as that has the driver included.

If you want a 360 Wireless Controller to work, I suggest get the Microsoft Xbox360 Wireless USB Receiver; otherwise return that controller and buy an official Microsoft Wireless XboxOne Controller; which can actually work via Wired, via a MicroUSB-to-USB data-sync cable.

I have downloaded a new package of drivers from the Nvidia site but when I run them, the installation program says that my GPU is not compatible and stops the installation. I don´t have an Nvidia GPU in my laptop.

I´m going to try to connect my Ps4 controller and play via bluetooth with a program called DS4WINDOWS. If it does not work I'll buy the microsoft wireless receiver for the Xbox360 controller.

Thanks a lot guys you have helped me a lot I was completly lost and now I know where the problem is.

After running the NVIDIA GPU installer, once it does a system check, click Cancel to exit it out.
This will have extracted the full driver package to C:\NVIDIA

Then from within Device Manager, update/change the Driver for the NVIDIA Controller and browse to:

C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\Version_#_Here\OS_Version_Here\International\ShieldWirelessController

You are right, the installation left the full package to C: NVIDIA. But when I try to update the drivers for the HID-compliant game controller the systems says that "The best drivers for your device are already installed" and won't let me update them.

And keep checking in joy.cpl and no controller appears.
