ddr3 with kaby lake?
im planning to upgrade to an i5-7600 and to a mobo that supports ddr3 to go along with it (i wanna keep my old ddr3 rather than spending more on ddr4 to replace it). i know the 7600 supports ddr3l, not ddr3, so would it be safe to lower the voltages of my existing ddr3 ram to 1.35v? and if so how would i go about doing it

DDR3 will not fit in a DDR4 socket.

Even if it would fit lowering the voltage will make the RAM run unstable or it might not work at all. Also a mobo like that is more expensive anyway so just get the DDR4 RAM.

the mobo has ddr3 sockets

DDR3L is a different socket than DDR3. Your DDR3 RAM will not fit in any way.

What mainboard are you talking about?

the mobo has ddr3 sockets. the ram fits. and asus b150 pro d3

Safe? Yes. Result in a trustworthy and stable system? No. Pony up for DDR4. Regular DD3 will not run reliably on low voltage.

Edit: or DDR3l if you already got the motherboard.

Actual DDR3, or DDR3L? Since you know as well saying that it supports DDR3L, and trying to use DDR3 why ask if it support DDR3, when you know it won't and clearly it doesn't. Your only option is to pony up for DDR4.

^This. Even if you get DDR3 to work, it's not meant to run on lower voltages, because of how they were design to run at a certain voltage to function properly.

because to my understanding isnt ddr3l simply ddr3 running at a lower voltage?

There are barely mainstream DDR3L mobo for Skylake if at all. All the mainstream Skylake mobo D3 are for DDR3. They go all the way up to 1.65V.

Will running DDR3 safe? There has been no report of it bursting any Skylake chip's IMC since release. Will it affect performance? No. I have benchmarked i7-6700k on 2400Mhz DDR3 and 3200Mhz DDR4, they end up performing pretty similar.

They are almost one the same, just one is able to maintain proper functions at lower voltages, because they were design for that.

^This. If the motherboard doesn't support the volts needed for the stander DDR3, it may/will not function properly, which is why motherboard companies put the DDR3L, instead of just saying DDR3, as it may not support the certain voltage needed to function properly.

I'm not sure if it's possible to cause damage by using lower voltage, but again I haven't heard anyone having damage their RAM by lowering the voltage.

What I am saying is running DDR3 at 1.65V (yep, 2400Mhz and maybe even higher). Despite what Intel is saying, there has been no report of dmg thus far. My take is that it's bound to be stable at least for the duration of the mobo warranty.

Yea the only differences between DDR3 vs DDR3L is the base voltage, and for that reason, you can't mix them. But most Skylake Motherboard I came across, would NOT support RAM that was 1.55V+, yes technically those fit and would function, but there was an extreme chance of burning up the RAM or the Motherboard when not using the low voltage DDR3L

Wrong, there's a chance it will burn up the CPU IMC as per Intel. The mobo can handle them just fine, so is RAM.

if it were me, i'd follow manufacturer's recommended specs.
if it says DDR3L 1.25V-1.35V, i would use that and not 1.5V-1.65V..

Given that few people blame the catastrophic failure that happens 6 months later on the overvoltage they applied, that's not really reassuring.
