AMD FX 8320 to Ryzen 5 1600X
I have been thinking of upgrading. Right now my system consists of an FX 8320 over clocked to 4.0ghz, 16GB of DDR3 ram, Windows 10, and a Gigabyte G1 970. I was wondering if making the move was really worth it or not? To be honest the 8320 seems to do well in any game that I play, from Hitman to Assassins Creed, the Total War games. I guess that Im looking to the future, I just want to make the right choice. I really do not want to go intel, its not that I can't aford it, I would just rather stick with AMD if I can, call me a fanboy if you would like. Would I see a decent jump? Or should I just stick with what I have right now? I was doing some research and I have found that when it comes to gaming, some are saying that there is around a 20% increase in performance going from an 8320 to a 1600X, if that would be the case, would that 20% even be worth the upgrade? Just some insight please.

It depends on your budget really. If you can afford it, upgrade is nice and worth it. If you are undecided because $$ is hard to part for you, just wait for sale.
I'd go with a 1600 and then overclock it to at least 3.6Ghz.
AMD Ryzen is the only sensible AMD related option; everything else AMD is dead.

What's your issue at the moment? 8320 + 970 + 16GB RAM should have no issues running ANY PC Game out there, period.

Going from FX-8 to pretty much even the low-end Ryzen is roughly 400% increase.

Going Ryzen also means getting; new (B350 / X370) AM4 socket Motherboard, AM4 Ryzen CPU, and DDR4 RAM

I've got the FX8350 4.4ghz and I'll be waiting for Zen 2 in 2018 with a 7nm process and small bump to the ipc.

I have no problem either playing games right know with an Rx580 8GB.

Ya the FX8xxx is behind but it's not unplayable for now.
That video really helps with all of the details, its answering alot of questions, I am very thankful for all of the help.
I really like Tech Deals, the guy really goes in depth with his videos.
i had same thing fx8120 i went with ryzen 1700. A good graphics card like 1060 or 1070 will keep your fx alive 1-2 more years on medium to high. you dont have to upgrade.
I guess another thing that I'm looking at is I have the money now but in a year or so I'll be looking to buy a house and such. I may not have the money then. Really...a 400% increase?...or do you mean 40%. My thoughts are...just how long will my current rig hold up for? Provided I have no hardware failures.
heres example real world:

planetside2:
fx 8120 - fps 40-58 depending on how much smoke in battle, overclock cpu helped keep it nearer 58
ryzen 1700 - fps 60 solid

unigine heaven
fx 8120/hd 7950 - 58 fps
fx 8120/gtx 1070 - 110 fps
ryzen/gtx1070 - 180 fps

metro 2033
ryzen/gtx 1070 - 120 fps

multitask:
fx8120 no - only play a game or do something else
ryzen 1700 - play planetside 2, watch dvd on tv, encode video on third monitor

A Ryzen 1600X is around 64% faster than a FX 8320.

56% faster single core,
59% faster quad core
112% faster multi core (all cores)

The 1600X is better in literally every way aside from the fact is has 2 less cores, but makes this up as it has 4 more threads

Thank you all for your insight. Well here is another thought, do I just buy a different video card to get me by a few more years? Or would it be better to just get the new CPU?

Your GPU is only slightly slower than a 1060/580, so you're good for another year or two.
If you think your current system is still fine then don't do it.
Your money will be more future-proof and useful whenever you feel the need to upgrade.

Likey coffe lake will be worse and neither will Zen 2.
I appreciate everything, I think that I will sleep on it for a little while.

I think what upcoast wrote is the right answer...
When you do upgrade, do it in 2018, dont do it now, you will have compatibility issues because Ryzen is new and the memory controller firmware (Agesa) isnt as optimised as it could become in the future.

A nicely configured 83xx is only a little bit slower than a Ryzen (40% so the marketing bumpf said - but until the compatibility issues are sorted out, its a lot less than that at present. Even having said that it is still nippier but to upgrade now and suffer ongoing compatibility issues while the mobo manufacturers sort out the bios firmware is not worth the headache)

If anything, ditch the 970 and go for a radeon 580 when you do upgrade.

I upgraded from a watercooled 8350 16Gb 2133Mhz Ram and 4gb Sapphire NitroX OC and wish now I had put it off till 2018 like Upcoast wrote.
