Why Does Windows 10 Tell Me I have Direct X12 But AMD Says DirectX 9?
Okay so I went to the Microsoft website and followed the steps to letting my OS (Windows 10) tell me which DirectX version I have. Apparently it's been Direct X12 this whole time and I never knew. This is because when I checked AMD Radeon Settings it only told me that I have Directx 9.14. So which should I trust and does it mean I can play games that require DirectX10 and later or am I still screwed?

Hmmm you seem familiar... Were we Steam friends at one point? I have AMD Radeon R5. I'll get mid range laptop next year though.

While Windows 10 has DX12 built in, you still need a gpu that supports DX12. What is your gpu?

AMD Radeon R5 is my APU and the Direct3D® Version is 9.14.10.01261.

AMD Radeon R5 series have different models: DX12, DX11, etc.
some games can't detect video on laptops correctly
post FULL model of APU not series

I honestly don't know what my specific model is but my CPU is AMD A10 9600P if that helps.

An R5 supports DX12. Try downloading and do a clean install of the latest amd graphics drivers. DX 9.14. sounds quite odd as DX 9.0c is typically what the nomenclature should be. Are you sure you're not confusing an amd driver version (9.14.)?
No according to System Information under the Help tab of the Steam client, my driver version is 22.19.162.4. The Direct 2D Version according to AMD Radeon Settings is 8.1.1.1599.

I also installed the latest yesterday after I replaced my broken HDD with a new SSD. That was the first thing I installed after Windows 10 OS of course.

In all honesty, AMD APU are all very poor; poor is the best AMD ever did when it comes to APUs.

It really wouldn't matter if your GPU supported DX12 on those specs; it wouldn't run most DX11/12 Games well anyways, due to having such poor specs that lack computing power.

Laptop users who wish to "Game" should have and should still, avoid everything AMD in Laptops, at all costs, until Ryzen Laptops come along. If you wish to play demanding games on Laptops; this basically requires the horse-power of an i5 or i7 + NVIDIA dedicated GPU.

A10-9600P is equal to around the performance of i3-5010U which is extremely poor overall.

You forgot to mention that to avoid Alienware at all costs too. The AMD Radeon R9 is also pretty good but sadly any laptop that has that APU is so freaking expensive.
What does Alienware have to do with anything?

Alienware computers cause lots of issues with games that makes them unplayable or have major problems that PC's of other brands don't have. They actually used to be of high quality until they got bought out by Dell. I would rather stick with my ♥♥♥♥♥♥ laptop then buy an overpriced malfunctioning Alienware any day.

Says who now? Alienware are actually quite good, they are one of the very few on the Market where the Battery outputs the same as the AC Adapter, allowing full performance Gaming on the go. Most Laptop brands still are not doing this, or charge more for such a battery as an optional addon.
to answer the question: what you see in the amd settings is the version of Direct3D NOT DirectX Version. windows has dx12 built in and that includes support for dx10 and 11.

if you want to play dx9 (also 8 and 7) games you have to install directx 9.0c runtime which also comes with every game installation so you probably already got that.

hit windows+R then run DXDIAG and it will tell you it has dx12

Yeah I did just that and it says I have Direct X12. I obviously know that if my VRAM isn't sufficient, I still won't be able to run the games.

No they are complete utter garbage compared to other brands like Asus and MSi.
