Also write down the volts you have for default, then work your way down by decreasing 0.10 each time you do a test with Prime95, or Cinebench, if you get a BSOD, go up by 0.05, until you stop getting a BSOD, or what you're comfortable with.
i7 870
when bios default it running over 1.350on stock [not sure] so i had to decreasing voltage on 1.17 and worked fine
Ok thanks this is first experience that i had to undervolting cpu that running stock
At the same time I upped my RAM from 8 GB 1066 to 16 GB 1333. So with CPU and RAM upgrades I was able to up graphics settings significantly and see details in games that I could not see before.
PS: My i7 870 is at stock settings 2.93 GHz (3.6 GHz turbo). And it seems to idle at the same 1200 MHz as my i5 did. So idle power use with i7 870 and GTX 1060 is still around 50 watts. I installed a package in Linux to monitor temperatures and when running Unigine Heaven at Extreme settings with full tessellation, maximum temperature of all cores of the 870 was 66 C. Idle or with just Steam client running the cores are 31-33 C. My only case fan is the exhaust fan built into my PSU at top of case (not counting CPU and twin GPU fans that just blow air around within case).
Does overclocking run it at that speed all of the time, vs. SpeedStep which varies speed on demand? When I put my 116 watt GTX 550 Ti in an old PC I have with single-core (hyperthreading) 3.2 GHz Pentium without speedstep it uses more max power (and idle power) than brief peak power (and idle power) of MUCH faster i7 870 with 120 watt GTX 1060 (measured AC input).
Yes I have MX-4 Artic Thermal Paste and re applied with Stock Cooler and eventhough it ran up 90c at maximum
currently i just oced at 3.52ghz(which is safe bet for Stock cooler) with decreased voltage to 1.21
idle is 49c and fans most up to 2800rpm or 3200 its loud but it doesnt matter when playing with headset on
when load it ran 75c
My GTX 1060 maxed out at 65C. When running Unigine Heaven benchmark, CPU was cooler and GPU was hotter.

$15 lousy dollars ^ would give you piece of mind and much better cooling.
im not gonna oc that much by using that and
as far when I use 2500k on stock cooler and stock speed never got this hot as it
I slap after market coolers on stock cpus all the time they're quieter and do a much better job than stock coolers.
Maybe your stock cooler push pins aren't locking in right it's anyones guess why you're getting high temps.
