Triple Monitor vs Super Ultra Wide
Hello,

I currently have a GeForce GTX 980 Ti GPU and have 3x 24 Inch Monitors connected to it and i've been more than happy with its performance to date, however the monitors are getting old and starting to have issues, so i was looking at replacing them.

The monitors i have are old TfT flat screen monitors.
I have always dreamed of having 3 curved monitors side by side, hopefully with minimal bezel intrusion.

My first instinct (after running it by the wife!) was to buy 3x Samsung G7 Odyssey Curved monitors and wall mounting them to form one nice big large curved display across the 3 screens.

However i'm worried that my aging GeForce GTX 980 Ti GPU wouldnt be able to cope with that. so i'm now thinking of getting one Super Ultra Wide 49 inch Samsung Odyssey monitor and buying a Geforce RTX 2070 Super GPU.

My concern is going from 3 monitors to 1 Super Ultra Wide monitor will mean a loss of function.

As it stands i play a game full screen on the centre monitor, have a Netflixaor Youtube screen on full window on the right screen and a browser on full screen on the left.

If i go for one Super Ultra Wide screen will i be still able to do this easily?
I know you can get aps like Display Fusion or Ultra Mon, which can force this but will it be more hassle than just dragging netlix or Youtube etc to one monitor and click fullscreen?

Has anyone here been where i am and had the same concerns etc that can offer advice?

I would absolutely stick with 3 monitors over one ultrawide.

Any gpu will have issues running a game on all 3 even with modern ones but that can easily be fixed by having it ran on the middle on more demanding games.

A lot of games have issues with even normal ultrawides and could only get worse on a super one plus many video sites won't also support them as well.

Relying on 3rd party apps to fix things can be hit or miss also plus if anything happens to a monitor you have backups unlike just relying on one monitor.
Thanks you have given me something to think about.
Anyone else have a take on this?
If you only want game on 1 monitor at 16/9, it is fine to have multiple monitors. You only want a Ultrawide if you want to game at 21/9 or 32/9, which I would love to do, but everyone is different.
i would think 3 would be easier to manage/troubleshoot if a monitor ever went bad, cant say the same with 1 ultra wide.

I would definitely go with the GPU upgrade though
In my opinion 3 monitors is not just waste of cash, it is waste of quality and usage (unless you really need a two monitor setup for work related stuff)

I would rather go for a larger and better quality screen. (not a ultravide)
If not then stick with 2-3

yeah what this guy says
3 monitors makes more sense over a single ultrawide.
i'd be a mess trying to get a game to run on only part of the screen with an ultra wide.
i could see one ultra wide and another 1080p or 1440p 16/9 monitor to complement it
but not just a single ultra wide vs 3 monitors, i'd choose the 3 monitors anyday.

aswell like the other guy said trying to run the most recent titles on an ultrawide (assuming atleast 1440p) you're gonna need a pretty chunky card to do so at a nice framerate.
personally i would avoid both options. but if you want/need it, like for work then 2/3 screen will do, ultrawide screen, personally i wont use it for gaming, but if you editing video's or anyform of software where you need large screen then its fine. But like what you also said what you wanted to do then two/three screens will be better option then one ultra wide screen

even for someone who just plays games a 2 monitor set up at min is a must. tbh.
its so annoying trying to use "windows multitasking" when you're wanting to have something else going like a movie, discord, youtube or whatever.also makes it alot easier to check messages or whatever else you need to without tabbing out of your game.

Hi guys, thanks for all the comments, it's really appreciated.
Some very good points here.

An update for you, i've bought and installed a Gigabyte Geforce RTX 2080 Super Windforce OC 8192mb graphics card. My thinking being that which option i do, Super Ultra Wide or 3 Monitors i'll need a beefier GPU.

(I had to promise not to buy the PS5 until at least mid way through 2021 in order to be "allowed" to buy this GPU along with the monitors. But I was fine with that, they will probably be cheaper then and there will be more games out for it too.

Oh and yes, i do occasionally work from home and need at least two monitors to do that effectively.

Thanks again

Give her a surprise present for her understanding, a brand new ps5
I have a 3440x1440 21:9 Freesync monitor as well as a 3840x1080 32:9 Freesync 2 monitor, I'd gotten the latter before the 5120x1440 version was released, but no regrets as it's easier on my GPU than the later version.

I used to game on a triple monitor setup, 3x 1920x1200 (I was among the first with a triple monitor + HD5870 setup in my neck of the woods), a ways back and while the experience was good (had upgraded along the way with CFX GPUs), I couldn't quite take the cable mess. And although I'd more or less tuned out the bezels separating the monitors, I still find it annoying from time to time.

Now that I've gone 21:9 and 32:9 (effectively 2x 27" 16:9 1080P monitors side-by-side without bezels), would I go back to 16:9, short and sweet answer is an emphatic 'NO!'. I enjoy LB movies on my 21:9 monitor which I'd crop to fit the full screen.

For example, this is Alita cropped to fit the entire screen of my 21:9 monitor (2.35:1 format is pretty close to 21:9)

And this is my 32:9 Samsung which I love as well, Serious Sam BFE looks great on it....

That's a really nice set up, and your right, movies look really good on that.
Have you encountered many issues with games struggling to "adapt" to your Super Ultra Wide resolution? And do you use any software solutions to counter any issues, ie, to create a virtual 1900x 1200 monitor in the middle of your screen (and thereby allowing you to have a browser etc on the left or right of it.

For 21:9 UWS gaming, there's not much to do as most games are fine with the aspect ratio. Some games scale very nicely at 21:9, others are just okay'ish. I have a feeling some of the screen is cropped to fit 21:9, but I don't find that disconcerting. With 32:9, yes, it can be quite a bit of cropping, though some games (Strange Brigade, Metro series, Serious Sam BFE + Jewel expansion to name but a few) scale very nicely. Scaling is game or rather, engine dependent I guess.

As for software to force 16:9 aspect ratio for games, I've not bothered as it defeats the purpose of going 21:9 and/or 32:9. But, I do have the added 'safety' zone of having a HTPC rig (i7 4770K, 16GB RAM, GTX1080) which is hooked up to my 4K TV for some 16:9 action (the GTX1080 is capable of gaming at 4K, you just have to tone down the ingame graphics settings to mid to get playable framerates).
I am a huge believer in one monitor to do all the jobs you want. So yes, if you want tons of screen then go for a 49" monitor. You don't have to use it all when it comes to gaming if you don't want to. I can't honestly see why anyone would ever want three monitors these days.
I have been using 21:9 since they first came out and never had an issue with games. If the worst comes to the worst then you can always play the game with black stripes. Not something you want to do for all games but most games do work at 21:9.
I will probably buy another monitor in a years time or so and it will be probably be 21:9 or 32:9.
