Low FPS after switching from HDMI to VGA and games crashing
I had my pc in a small room under our house as well as my TV, whcih was where i stored them.

When i set up my computer again and hooked it up to the TV i wasnt getting a picture showing on my screen, i wiggled the HDMI chord around and then my mouse showed up, but it was a black screen. I restarted my computer to see if that would fix it, since it was the first time it was booted up in 2 months. After I did that there was no picture at all, and I was getting no signal. I used a different HDMI cable and it still didnt work. I found a VGA cable that had an HDMI adapter on ther other end, and i plugged in both sides to the computer (VGA in pc HDMI in tv and vice versa) and there was still no signal (I had all the right input channels and everything). Last night i took the adapter off and tried pluggin in the VGA onto both sides and there was still no picture, but this morning when i launched it worked. after i updated my games, when i went to play i had extremely low FPS of 15-20 as opposed to my normal 100+ and this is happening on all games. I also could not play fullscreened, only windowed.

My Specs are:
ASUS G11
Intel core i5-6400
memory: DDR4 8G
NVIDIA geforce gtx 970 4gb
HDD 1 tb

I think my HDMI isnt working because the port may have been damaged in storage. Theres one port going into my video card and one into the motherboard

any help is appreciated

Go into NCP, hit the "change resolution" tab and check what your refresh rate is.

NCP = NVidia Control Panel.

Gtx 970 does not have a vga port, so i suspect you plugged the vga into your integrated video card.

Yes the VGA is not a part of the video card

You must plug the display cord into the gpu to use it. That is why your frame rates are low.

As for fixes, if your 970 hdmi port is indeed shot. You can get an dvi-d to hdmi cable, or displayport to hdmi.

vga and dvi-a = analog only
hdmi and dvi-d = digital only
dvi-i = digital and analog

hdmi - vga adapter cables do not work as intended
they were made for a specific dvd player that has a 15pin sub-d to output hdmi signal

there are a few convert cables for hdmi - vga, but they are a poor answer since they have no settings on how to convert the output

if you are using vga, get a dvi-a to vga adapter to use on the gtx970

or if you are using the mobos vga it will get very low fps since thats using the intel hd instead of the gtx970

vga is very slow. there is dvi to hdmi adaptors if you want to transfer sound(or you could use displayport if your monitor supports that, or a displayport to hdmi cable). otherwise you could just stick with dvi.

vga is fine, but no hdcp support
iv had a few 1920x1200 vga monitors that were just as clear (when using a high quality vga cable) as dvi/dp

no additional input lag, sometimes vga is faster since there is no compresion in the stream
and it supports 72-90hz even at 1200+

dvi is better as that supports at least 144 hz. i am in fact running in 144 hz on my monitor through dvi(or at least i was until i switched to displayport). the thing is that my new graphics card only have 1 dvi so i had to switch one monitor to displayport at some point.

In stead of the HDMI port bro g shot, the OP could have their monitor set to VGA mode.
so new graphics cards does not have vga connectors. the nvidia cards have not had them since last decade. not even the old 500 megabyte ram geforce cards had that.

not quite correct, nvidia 9xx was the last to series support vga using dvi-i to vga adapters
not sure what the last amd series was to support analog via dvi-i

if you are using a vga monitor, its time to replace it
what i said was correct. i said that they did not have vga connectors.
