When you use windows drive tools and get to the Defrag window use the Analyse option. If it's Fragmented 10% or more Defrag it otherwise don't bother as you really won't be getting much or an improvement.

Or better yet turn auto defrag back on and let Windows deal with it in the back ground

As often as you want to.
I never do that. It probably happens automatically. Try not to overcomplicate things.

3-5 days seems way too often
I've personally done it only one time since I bought this 2tb hdd arround 6 years ago
works like a charm and no bad sectors (checked with hdd tune)

never defragment an SSD

What about trim?

Trim itself doesn't do anything with SSD data at all. It just marks NAND page as deleted. Later garbage collection firmware subsystem uses this marks to convert journal NAND blocks back to data. But automatic routines cannot completely remove in-block fragmentation.

"SSD TRIM is an Advanced Technology Attachment ( ATA) command that enables an operating system to inform a NAND flash solid-state drive (SSD) which data blocks it can erase because they are no longer in use. The use of TRIM can improve the performance of writing data to SSDs and contribute to longer SSD life."

So it’s okay to use Trim with a SSD. I thought when people said don’t defrag a SSD they meant Trim. I don’t see defrag option with any of my SSD’s, only Trim.

TRIM doesnt need to be manually used BUT it can be, though it'll activate on its own when needed
And yes, TRIM should always be enabled, by default it normally is.

TRIM "KINDA" works like defragging but for an SSD, in a sense, but not exactly, and its pretty much instant unlike defragging a HDD. Like, instead of moving files to different parts of the disk on HDD's, un needed data is just deleted instead of moved around.

In short
Yes you can manually TRIM, but you dont need to as it happens automatically

SSD controllers have built-in flash translation layer (FTL). It performs defragmentation on regular basis. But its capabilities are limited. Over time, all solid state drives begin to suffer from the so-called write amplification. At the same time, drive read speed also decreases. This is a valid sign that you need to manually defragment SSD.

How often to defragment? Well, I suppose routinely every two or so weeks, and whenever I delete a large swath of data from my drive (e.g. uninstalling multiple games at once).
vadim 22 jun. 2020 às 5:16
File defragmentation isn't that necessary with modern filesystems. All of them have built-in defragmentation.

If you have hdds, you only really need to defrag about once a month.

Use Piriform Defraggler.

And before you defrag scrap all the temp and cache data junk from the PC first, such as using Disk Cleanup and CCleaner. And in Steam Client, going to settings and delete temp web cache data and delete temp download cache.

This way you will have less to defrag, as you don't want to waste time defrag gong junk data you would be deleting anyways.

Forgot to ask,how does reinstalling Windows affects the fragmentation

Disk should be mostly unfragmented after a reinstall. Since it will start writing at the beginning of the disk and overwrite all old data.

Windows even uses a few tricks such as allocated data for certain files to prevent them fragmentating in the future.
