Overclocking Intel quad Q9400 HELP!!!
Hello, this is my first time ever to oc processor, I have this Q9400 with stock cooling paired with gtx 970 which I know is not good, 8gb ram(4 2gb stick that are all the same frequencies and timings), gigabyte ga p35c ds3r mobo which I heard is good for oc-ing and 450w corsair psu.

I want to oc Q9400 to at least 3.3ghz if it will act fine but I didnt find any good guide that explains how should I do it, I can just oc it but I want to make it work good with ram frequency I want to put FSB to 1:2 or 1:1 but I dont know exactly what should I do so I need some good guide or someone patient willing to explain it to me, ty in advance

the q9650 is a 7 year old cpu and a better cpu to overclock, same as q9400 but it's still a good cpu for older games 2017

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9400/m1706vsm244

You're mistaken. Or rather your reliance on userbenchmark has failed you and/or you don't know what the less than symbol means...

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/35428/intel-core-2-quad-processor-q9650-12m-cache-3-00-ghz-1333-mhz-fsb.html

Q3 2008, so 12 years old, like I said. And for comparison 3rd gen Core CPU's were released in 2012. So the i5 3570k I bought in 2013 runs circles around the Q9650.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650-vs-Intel-Core-i5-3570K/m1706vs1316

I was running a Q6600 at OC'ed to 3.0ghz until 2013 and sure it was fine. But no amount of OCing is going to overcome the deficiencies compared to CPU's that were modern in 2013. And upgrading from a Q6600 to a Q9650 even in 2013 would have been pretty harebrained.

as to the op you'll need a water cooler never use stock cooler to oc, but the q9650 will overclock better then, at lest from tests, i did back in the day shows it as so

I've already addressed this. The Q9650 is better than the Q9400, but they're so old it doesn't matter. An extra 10-15% performance between 12 year old CPU's doesn't warrant the cost unless you get it for free, or overclocking "more" is the only goal you care about, or getting a Q9650 has been a lifelong dream. None of which is really relevant to this topic. It's just deaf pedantry to ignore what hardware the OP has and what he's trying to do and why.

In general people aren't interested in dumping money or too much effort into 12 year old systems. And I believe OP has already echoed this sentiment as I predicted.
that or it was when they last did there testing on said cpu, my bad in this case,

but if there going to be using it for some time the best cpu you can get would make it last a lot longer, i wouldn't call it a deaf deal,i would get the best you can get if you're lucky to find one that is for less then 30$, as this was a suggest it's up to the op to care

No it wouldn't. Either CPU (Q9400 and Q9650) is just too old and the performance difference between them isn't that great.

  • Well you probably weren't going to get one for $30 in 2013.
  • It looks like you could get a Intel Pentium Gold G5400 for $30 too, "if you're lucky", and on stock cooling that will run circles around a Q9650.
  • Why not discuss the actual price instead of leaning on the optimal "best deal if you get lucky price"? Not good for your argument is it?
  • You specifically are not just advising that he get a Q9650, but a whole liquid cooling setup presumably to overclock it better (or best). So you keep adding to the cost and you can't just hand wave the total cost for your upgrade scheme away.
  • So instead of buying a liquid cooler and a slightly better 12 year old CPU to get moar overclocks. You could get pretty close to buying a motherboard and RAM for that G5400 I mentioned earlier. And that's kind of my point why people don't typically like dumping money into ancient systems because it's often better to buy current entry level hardware instead of trying to upgrade and maximize performance of ancient hardware, if you're spending any kind of money.
  • OP doesn't care. See post #12.

you seem to be getting ruder, almost like you can't be nice about this and move on.
im not making an argument you are, that is the end of it

also it's more not moar.:lunar2020thinkingtiger:
https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/moar/ moar was intentional use of slang.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/argument apparently you only know one definition for the word argument. Might want to look into that.

If you're gonna be a pedant, at least bring your A game.

Man I actually agree with you, you are making some good points. If I had Q9650 I would ask hot to oc that and not the Q9400 I have, suggesting buying something new is like wow if I had money to buy like intel 5, 6, 7 or any good gen I would just buy it and not ask anyone about overclocking, cant you guys just help me with what I asked and that is how to properly oc proc that I HAVE I didnt ask if it was good or bad or anything I know it is bad but I dont plan to play gta 6 on this thing I want to use it for some older titles and I want to oc it because instead of playing on my laptop maybe I will play cs go on this pc and cs go depends on fps very much so...

Anyway man thank you for making a lot of good points ❤
