Correct way of using G Sync
Just got a new Gsync 144hz monitor and I wanna be sure I have it set right.

If i understand correctly I have to set Vsync to on in nvidia control planel global settings and then turn it off in the game options?

Also I see people saying I should cap the FPS limit at around 141-142

You don't need vsync on. Use rtss to limit the fps to anything under 143fps. Personally I cap to 100fps just for frametime reasons.

I have a 100Hz monitor with an overclock to 120Hz.
I set it to 120Hz and limit the frames to 100 with gsync on.
Vsync is turned off of course.
At over 100Hz some games can stutter so 100Hz it is.

I have a 165hz G-SYNC monitor and I think it's best just to set V-SYNC to off globally and be done with messing with anything else.

But most guides say to enable Vsync globally and then disable it in game..

G-SYNC works regardless if you have V-SYNC on or off if the monitor is a proper G-SYNC monitor and not one of those "G-SYNC ready monitors".

G-Sync works the same way for either G-sync the hardware or G-Sync on Freesync displays. Read the link I provided as it explains the advantages of having V-Sync on in Nvidia Control Panel. That goes for Compatible or Hardware based G-Sync as they do the same thing.

The problem with G-Sync is that it doesn't remove tearing, it just reduces it and moves to the bottom part of the screen. G-Sync removes stuttering with VSync and variable framerate, so VSync is the reason G-Sync exists in the first place.

is there a good reason for n-sync?
retro_Ed Jun 10, 2020 @ 8:32pm
G-sync on Linux :
Enable G-sync from Nvidia settings for tearless frames inside G-sync range 30-144fps.
and
Enable ingame V-sync for tearless frames over G-sync range +144.

I love the way you're talking. It's quite modern.

Gsync on, Vsync off

Fps limit via MSI Afterburner + RTSS

Remember that many games load up by default in Borderless mode. Where Vsync can't apply.

And I always use 2 or 3 Monitors, so full screen is off the table
