Need help upgrading my pre-built pc.
Hello, I am a PC Gamer who has been playing on pc for 6 years now but I have never build a PC instead of building a pc, I bought a pc from best buy, ASUS's G11CD (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-desktop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-black/4826600.p?skuId=4826600 ). for like $1200 dollars last summer. I know I could have got more what I paid for if I built a pc but my parents didn't have fate on me that I could build a pc even though it was my money and I was paying through payments. Anyway, it's a year now and I have managed to save around 200 dollars. And I was wondering if I could upgrade my pc (I am not sure if I can upgrade my pc since it's a pre-built) and if so what should I upgrade with only a 200 dollar budget. I feel like my pc has too many lag spikes when playing games like black desert online or GTA 5 and it takes a while for my pc to refresh when I boot it up. Also If I can upgrade my pc what guides should I watch since this is going to be my first time and is it difficult to upgrade a PC's hardware. Here are my specs according to a program called Speccy: Operating System is Windows 10 Home 64-bit, CPU is an Intel Core i5 6400 @ 2.70GHz which is clocks at 28 °C, 8.00GB Single-Channel Unknown @ 1063MHz (15-15-15-36) RAM, Motherboard is an ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. G11CD (LGA1151) which clocks at 119 °C, Graphics Card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (ASUStek Computer Inc) which clocks at 34 °C, and for Storage, I use 931GB TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 (SATA) which clocks at 37 °C.

h110 motherboard.. 8gb RAM.. i5 6th gen.. GTX 970.. For $1200?? This PC is worth $800 at most.

Download and run CPU-z, press the validate button and post the URL of the webpage that appears please. Then we know exactly what your specs are.

- You could upgrade to 16gb dual channel.

(looks at the posted pictures)
- Also get a can of air and clean it.

Your PC is perfectly fine.

Really all you need is another matching 8GB stick for dual channel

I know I got scam but tax also adds up. For the dust, I am sorry that is my mistake but for the reason of not cleaning my PC, I have been afraid to touch or open up my PC until now (I lost one of the screws today). Here is the url: https://valid.x86.fr/rpkt4d

Not much point to upgrade this if you use 1080p monitor and not really for $200.

Then, how do I fix the occasional lag spike I have every once in a while?

As others have said, your best bet would be some more ram, any GPU you get will be limited by the CPU, and a CPU upgrade will be limited by your motherboard, the 970 is still a good GPU.

It's completely safe to touch the hardware or to open the PC. It's quite common for people to be overprotective of their PC. Don't worry it's not fragile.

You are currently using this RAM: https://www.amazon.com/Hynix-HMA41GU6AFR8N-TF-DDR4-2133-Non-ECC-Server/dp/B0165ZUTIG/
It's server memory so it's overpriced of course.
So if you want to upgrade to 16gb get one of these.

You could also get a new 1080p screen since you are currently running at 1600 x 900.

So I just should buy the same type of ram ( https://www.amazon.com/Hynix-HMA41GU6AFR8N-TF-DDR4-2133-Non-ECC-Server/dp/B0165ZUTIG)? And down the future, what CPU and motherboard should I get so I can game at 1080p without any lag spikes at high settings at least?

After upgrading the RAM you should start saving up for a new GPU.

The extra RAM should already make quite a difference and get rid of some of the stutter.

For the most part you can keep your GTX970. That alone can save you $200 as it is not a bad video card for most games like GTAV. If you want to, you could esily upgrade to a Core i7 6700K...and maybe invest in some compressed air yto clean out your PC...though growing up in a rural area, I have seen worse come to me for cleaning (dead mice in the power supply for instance).

You only have to open the latch on top. The latches on the bottom are solid pieces of plastic, they don't move.

His motherboard would kind of make the cost of getting a 6700k pointless, especially when he would then also need a new cooler, better to save up for new kit, an 8400 with a budget z370 (so it can be upgraded with a K chip in the future) would be as fast and pretty similar in price.

Thank you all, I think my tech problem has been resolved. Now I just hope I don't damage my PC adding the Ram since it's my first time and I am afraid of damaging something.

Plus, it's from Amazon, it's crazy easy to return stuff to them if it doesn't work.
