It's not dated, it will be solid for at least another 3-4 years.
But there are better/cheaper CPUs available now like the AMD Ryzen and Intel 8th gen CPUs.
So no don't get x99, it's to expensive, doesn't have a upgrade path and there are others CPUs available now that have a way better price/performance ratio.
Truth of gaming CPU ATM

Nothing is really outdated starting from Haswell and Ryzen.
Faildozer IS outdated outside of Lala land and magic console command.
Why did you buy a x99 mobo and then never used it? Those things are quite expensive.
Since you already have the mobo, sure you could pick up a 5th/6th gen x99 CPU. You do need to do some heavy overclocking to get the most out of these CPUs so get a decent cooler. Get a 6 core X99 like the 6850k or 5820k, whichever one is cheaper, then overclock it to 4,3 - 4,6 depending on how good your chip overclocks.
Going from a 5820k to a 6850k is not really a upgrade, both CPUs are about the same.
Cannonlake is rumoured to be launched late 2018, that line of CPU's are gonna be a more interesting candidate for an upgrade.
